#11 Re: Guns N' Roses » Why no photo shoots after 1991? » 151 weeks ago

When Doug Goldstein replaced Alan Niven as manager, they stopped functioning as a normal band. This was in around 1991, I think. After that, Axl's proven difficult to be coaxed into a room with the others most of the time. This creates a Catch-22: while he's open to ideas in the studio and allows the players some freedom with the live arrangements, lack of band photos goes on to portray him as the head honcho, separate from the backing band. Hard to say if this has been intentional, but it has been the resulting perception.

A good chunk of the stuff on the album is still good, but try Bad Apples.

[Pre-Chorus]
I got my camera back from customs, got my law fees up to date
Hell, they must've seen me comin', ain't this life so fuckin' great?

[Chorus]
When the shit hit the fan, it was all I could stand, yeah
Well, I'm a frequent flyer
My body's breathin' while it can but what I don't understand is that
My world ain't gettin' no brighter
If I could touch the sky, well, I would float on by
While everybody's talkin', hell, I'm just another guy
If it were up to me, I'd say, just leave me be
Why let one bad apple spoil the whole damn bunch?

That song's funny, Twainy and shows off Ax's way with words. It's somewhat the same vein as some CD songs, as in, he's getting singled out and hassled (in his own mind, at least) by just about everybody he comes across. But he takes it in stride and points out the inherent hilarity of these situations. That humor is what I feel is mostly absent from CD. Instead of Axl the jokester, we get Grumpy. The few lines intended as funny are now cringy (Absurd, Sorry) and in general, they are anchored around the droll moods of the misunderstood mansion dweller.

So here’s a thought

If they’re revisiting the CD vault and re-recording with Duff and Slash, why not revisit this old material and ask Axl to do his thing

Because that would require Axl to write new lyrics, which appears to be a massive roadblock for him.

And when you look at some of the lyrics on CD, it becomes even more embarrassing.

GN'R started being run like shit after Axl Rose became the boss. He's the boss but he doesn't want to lead.

Yeah, that's the gist of it.

With Axl nothing ever makes any sense.

It's the old hat. Anxiety. In the past, Axl's been terrible with show starts. Cold feet, stagefright, whatever. Getting him even to the right city, let alone the venue has often been a chore. The same with releasing albums, and even, doing interviews. Eddie Trunk once let out that TB kept them waiting for hours post-show, not telling Axl in advance, out of fear that he'd be "freaked out for days". Anxiety attacks are something he's been apparently battling with most of his life. So he may "want" to do things with the band, until his insecurities bite him in the ass. Even big bags of money have been irrelevant next to his fierce inner critic, which can be amped up with a careless visit to the GNR forums.

Anxiety's tricky, as it can lead to shooting oneself in the foot. One creates circumstances wherein one is late for an appointment, and the rush increases the marginal of error. This has been another recurring cycle for Axl in public. He's made it an uphill battle by procrastinating and then something blows up at his face due to the strain. His own choices and phobias, so there's little to defend there. Sympathizing him would be easier if he'd own up his dysfunctionality, instead of blaming other people for his grievances every single time.

Stay of Execution is Axl's general approach to releasing music.

Oh. What's changed since 2002? Or 2014?

Axl's mortgage, for one. He funded the pre-NITL touring band out of pocket for years. Profitable enough to keep going, but a monetary gamble, regardless.

Have they downsized a bit on this tour? Yeah there's stadiums but I see some arenas in the mix.

Don't want to risk playing in a half empty Levi Stadium so they're going to SAP Center instead.

A band like Guns generally gets paid up front by the promoters, who in turn get sweaty palms over eventual attendance. For Guns, bigger venues are more money in the bank. Downsizing and upscaling is an ongoing thing, but it's mainly driven by local markets and grassroots realities that the promoters need to adapt to. Then they haggle with the band over dates and expenses.

Axl's generally less concerned about venue size and attendance and more about getting the whole of the show "right". If he can bask in the adulation of the first three rows and is able to hear himself while singing, he can be a happy camper even with half the seats curtained off.

Curtis Laur is credited in the CD booklet as a guitar tech. He's in Facebook, for instance, so adventurous ones can drop him a line.

Sounds like he might've worked with the band during the Beavan era ('98-'00).

You think a shirt with an emboss logo is bad merch?

That's still ways from The Misfits and their... swag.
