His solo material is great too, most of it instrumental. One of the reasons Mars Volta dissipated was because Omar wasn't putting as much effort into it anymore. Their last record was basically phoned in.

The lyrics are cringe-worthy on a lot of that solo album and his others. Maybe that's why Watch This is my favorite song from his solo era. Actually, I'm very hard on most lyricists nowadays. I listen to mostly instrumental music.
Ever listen to this guy?
Almost as prolific as BH.

Anybody know much about these SSD hard drives? I'm getting one for the added speed, but not sure if I should just go with one to run my OS, or buy big and use it for my main drive as well.

At one stage the offical site linked to a review claiming slash ruined the UYI albums....that was enough for me
I'd chalk that up to the yes men. Axl has never hinted that Slash work didn't cut it. Even in the Loder interview in the late 90s he lamented not being able to make the record he wanted since Slash wasn't around to provide the necessary guitar. At worst he critiqued Slash' work ethic.
In comparison Axl had no issue with calling out Izzy for his shoddy recording standards on the UYI's, and he never hated him personally I think.

Maybe there's still time..
Could be. In contrast to most artists his age, Axl is still pissed off. A very valuable resource in the creative process.
If they attempt a new album I say they have every opportunity to make it great and inspired.

To me, that sort of coins the Slash-Axl working relationship. One is good in laying the foundation, while the other has a vision of what it could become. Slash's solo works are different beasts to Estranged, while Axl's works lack the unifying lead guitar. It seems they grew apart because, as time passed, they lost respect for one another's contributions. Axl could've elevated those 3-4 Snakepit songs, but Slash grew tired of waiting on him. Axl felt Slash was irreverent and replaceable. They both lost, there.
Don't see Axl ever losing respect for Slash creatively. He bent over backwards trying to make it work. He only considered him replaceable in the sense he would rather continue without him than be under his thumb.
If waiting was the only thing Slash tired of he would have allowed Axl to work on a few select songs while he went out on tour. According to Slash he needed to be on the road to stay clear of drugs. Axl "screwing up the material" had little to do with it.
That to me suggest the real issue was Axl controlling the band and Slash resenting it.

Darin Morgan, right?
The show was serious but a bit oddball, too. Mulder collected porn early on, if memory serves me right.
Duchovny brags about having the largest porn collection in Hollywood.

I'm a terrible judge of Slash' albums. To me it sounds like all the others.
If he did save up stuff I would think much of it was used in VR since that was "the big project".

Crazy how 49k sales can get you the number 3 slot on the top 200.
Especially when it counts digital too.
Would have thought Mustaine had more fans than that. Do you know the numbers for the recent SG albums?

polluxlm wrote:Well, is BOB worthy? Not every GN'R song is a classic. Most, but not all.
Their solo careers show that Axl was critical to the creative process. Even bad ass riffs like Slither are marred by the uninspired mediocrity of Weiland, and he was the best singer they worked with.
I wouldn't call Weiland mediocre – he was up there with Axl in terms of his passion and ability to craft a phrase. The only thing he didn't have was the vocal range. Passion and writing ability are what differentiate them from the herd – with almost all of the GN'R solo stuff, particularly Slash's efforts, the music's perfectly good but it's let down by what the singer's scribbled on a notepad. There's usually a line in every Slash solo song that makes me cringe ("Nervous twitchin' in my hands," "Starlight, don't you cry we're going to make it right," "Gonna make my way down to Mexico.").
He's mediocre in VR. Maybe because I consider a vocalist without range as useless as a guitar player without solos, or because he was old and deep in drugs at the time.
The Weiland bashing is often political. Some people just don't like what alternative rock represented.
His skill and the range of feeling he could put in his voice was second to none. His writing was top drawer world class stuff.
He knew how to not be cheesy and how to subvert the cliches of rock n roll just enough that his songs felt fresh but still had that rock n roll vibe. A true master.
That's a thing, bashing alt rock? Jesus...
His writing may have been good in STP, or fit that music, but in VR I don't see it. His major achievement was not sounding bad like Slash' other singers. His voice is pretty decent for a rock singer, but the match with VR didn't strike me as very organic. That type of band is screaming for a vocalist with an impressive range.
