#281 Re: Guns N' Roses » Doug Goldstein Letter to Axl » 659 weeks ago
Common sense, Ali. You know, that something other people use. Believe me, nobody on Earth would sign over a million dollar worth property for nothing, just to see Axl smile. Except you, maybe.

It does show the lengths people will go to if they think they can get back in the inner circle.
Some of these ideas would have been interesting too like the festival.
But at the same time even if it was Doug who told Slash and Duff Axl would bail on the tour if they didn't sign the rights over:
1. It was a plausible lie only because Axl was constantly showing up late, refusing to do things, getting angry, storming off stage etc and making life hard for the others.
2. Axl created an environment where there's a wall of handlers between him and the band so they can't discuss anything informally to check the record.
3. It wasn't doug who had the term inserted into the contract.
4. It wasn't doug who relied on the term when he quit the band in 1995 and asked Slash and Duff to join a new GNR with Axl as boss.
So i think there's only so many stones that can be cast in doug's direction.
Axl wanted the name and Doug got it for him. Plain and simple.
Noone can doubt that Axl was satisfied with the outcome. Anyone with half a brain could have found out that Slash and Duff didn't signed over the name just to make Axl happy. Axl knew money wasn't involved. He surely knew that Douggie made some dirty tricks to get the name for him. Axl was fully aware of his puppet's dirty politics, but didn't do anything, cause he got what he wanted. It's another story that he's a proven hipocrite who'd lie till hell freezes over to make himself look innocent.
BTW this whole blackmailing story wouldn't matter too much today, if Axl proved to be a good captain (and owner) in the past 18 years. Unfortunately he got the wheel and drove the car off the cliff.

Pathetic.
No wonder that noone dares to tell Axl that his singing sucks. I'm sure he's living in another Neverland.

That's the depressing bit, right?
Leaving the band name issue out of this, Ax currently has a more than proficient lineup behind him, a group that genuinely seems to like one another and would certainly have a good album or two under their belts. It's way better in terms of chemistry / skill than most backing bands for lead singers and a lot more than what he deserves at this point. He rewards them by doing fuck all aside touring. Coward; he could easily do a new song or two again live, to test the waters and allow the band to feel smug about playing new stuff they created as a unit.
Absolutely. These guys are dedicated and professional musicians who want to deliver and do deliver. They save the show and Axl's ass. If the delivered only on Axl's level, the fans would eat them alive after 3 songs. They cloak the weakest point. Ain't it funny that we still have the debate that this isn't GN'R cause the players changed, when the biggest hiatus is Axl himself?

Axl sounded like total shit.
Everything else was very nice.
Axl sounded like shit. His look and moves were also ridiculous. He really needs to retire or start working on his voice and stamina. He should have years ago. I'd prefer a playback performance over his live singin' right now. He's awful.
The band was really great though. Very great. They deserve and need to hire a better singer to form a super tribute band. Or a new one that makes and releases music.

Well he certainly knows what his solo should sound like. I mean, think about it. Axl let's him write it.
Then he'll cut it piece by piece and construct a new solo DJ will have to learn.

I don't think it's a tie on guitar...Slash is a much better guitarist than Jimmy Page.
Please... madagas declared that I'm the biggest fanboy on this board, but even I don't believe that Slash would be better than Page. Page wins, sorry. Slash grew a lot as a player in the recent years, but Jimmy was an innovator, while Slash was only the leader of a renessaince. Maybe Slash's solos are better, but Page's strange chords, original chord progressions and appreggios beat the shit out of GN'R's. Slash needs a second guitar player. Jimmy doesn't. As a fanboy I'd place Slash higher than even Jimi Hendrix, but Page? No.
On the other hand Plant beats Axl. JPJ beats Duff. Bonzo beats Steven and Matt combined. Led Zeppelin had the better musicians.

Feel free to change your vote afterwards...
I'm fully aware of that and it doesn't make me enjoy their music any less, so no I won't change my vote. That would be like voting against GN'R because of Axl's despicable behavior and lyrics over the years.
Well, I knew these, voted for GN'R, but still think Led Zeppelin was the better, more influental and more important band. They stole parts of music from other artists in their early days (plus Nobody's Fault But Mine). Fact. GN'R haven't (except that very important Rhiad intro and possibly the Don't Cry chord progression). But still... LZ built these snippets and parts into much larger and much, much better songs. Furthermore, they created a shitload of really original A+++ quality material. Plus they were possibly the best live band of all time. Music thieves don't play shows like they did. Geniuses do. If GN'R had the same amount of material, it could be a different situation. But they don't have.

Slash
Taking a couple guitars I haven't played in a while on this trip. + my regular ones. A few new songs added to the set to boot. iiii]; )'
Rehearsing new songs and adding them to the setlist? Very uncool. The true GN'R fans will be disappointed.
#290 Re: Guns N' Roses » Skwerl's post on MyGNR regarding his leak and his source » 660 weeks ago
They are playing LESS original songs during that longer set than Slash. They are playing LESS songs off their last album than Slash. They are playing MUCH LESS songs from the past 20 years than Slash. Also, a 3 hour set full of boring solos are LESS entertaining than a 2-hour-long explosion.
I'm with John. Axl chose the safe route: old GN'R nostalgia and a few more covers. Nobody forced him to do it. Nobody's forcing him to do it. That's they way he wants to run this business. Tiny little effort and milking the old band's legacy.
