#281 Re: Guns N' Roses » The Lost Velvet Revolver Albums - Could they become GNR? » 423 weeks ago

I've always liked the early VR stuff. Set Me Free was a blast. Contraband was an awesome, underrated record. but Libertad era was kind of meh. uninspired, dull. I don't really think they could have ever moved to a GNR territory, because in the time of Libertad, GNR were a totally different beast already.

velvet revolver never managed to find their own identity. their sound was like a weirdly forced blend of scott with an uninspired guns. wicked garden by stone temple pilots came on the radio the other day and it blew me away. listening to that vs anything off libertad and you can tell how much scott was out of his element in vr.

occasionally, vr almost broke free into the stratosphere, with songs like come on, come in, fall to pieces, set me free, you got no right, she builds quick machines and sucker train blues. i jam all of those (and a few more) to this day, but i'd much rather just make a playlist of songs from afd, the illusions, core and purple.

as always, though, i'd be very interested in hearing any unreleased material.

I would guess marketing error. You would think the copywriting gets some pretty thorough QA'ing, but otoh I can see how its an oversight. Plus, a design firm (or department) like this probably kicks one of these out an hour. So it's not like it was carefully drawn up over a weeks time with revision stages.

marketing error? if anything, i'd say this is marketing strategy. if the US tour is struggling to sell out, why not get a buzz out there that this will be the last time anyone ever sees them on stage together?

brilliant post. i'll have to give that whole story a read sometime soon.

i've said it before, but out of all the new songs played at rio 3, madagascar blew me away the most. to this day, the song still holds strong; it hasn't aged a bit.

the main reason i've always loved it is because it's axl singing to himself, for himself. it's his most self-reflective work to date... so much so that i think axl is an extremely brave man just to be able to sing this in front of thousands of people.

guns n' roses ending with chinese democracy just doesn't feel right. a good album, but not a swan song.

#285 Re: The Sunset Strip » Most Recent Movie You've Seen » 424 weeks ago

just saw dunkirk in theaters over the weekend.

if i wasn't aware that nolan was directing it, i would have probably loved it. instead, i went in expecting some sort of mystery, intrigue or twist, and was left disappointed with a straightforward war flick.

the music, cinematography and acting was pretty damn good... but it just never hooked me, like most of his other movies do.

is going down the only song that tommy wrote for gnr that we know of? the tab book credits him on cd, street of dreams, there was a time and catcher... but i'd imagine that's only for the bass parts?

I like Bucket! Axl should have done a fucking solo album with him. But Slash IS the sound of GNR. BUT HE DIDN'T have the balls to be the next Ozzy...

this x1,000,000

as talented a singer/songwriter axl is, all he should have needed was a creative force behind him like bucket & brain.

those 2 already have natural chemistry; it blows my mind how axl didn't take full advantage of that.

the main reason i want to hear the general is because it's supposedly a brain song. knowing that, it's likely to have buckethead all over it. we also know beltrami worked on that song... there's no fuckin' way that song is anything short of amazing.

at this point, it's probably been tinkered to death with an ashba solo over bucket's parts, but i'd kill a man to hear the original demo.

i feel like that's just a self-conscious axl trying to save face.

as nuts as he is, there's no possible way that his favorite incarnation of guns n fuckin roses is one with bumblefoot.

if he said the 2002 lineup, i might buy it... but that is just axl trying to convince himself he wasn't just treading water for the past decade of his life.

#289 Re: Guns N' Roses » Guns N' Roses planning new album - 'It's too good not to happen!' » 424 weeks ago

the axl i know would want to "bury chinese."

with all the bullshit, negativity, rumor & innuendo surrounding that album... you'd think he would want to wipe that out of everyone's memory with an inspired return to form.

i don't think axl wants to be remembered as the failed solo artist who was forced to get back with slash just to be relevant and profitable again... or is the money enough for him to laugh his way to the bank and call it a career?

I don't understand the business model. Someone recently told me that they make all their money for the whole year off of wrestlemania...thus making at least 9 months of the year disposable fodder.

That, and the WWF/E becoming a publicly owned company...and all sorts of other things that make the motivations of the individual and the company so much different.

vince is an idiot who is also a genius. in other words, a millionaire who should be a billionaire.

he'd rather feel like he's right than please the fans.

it's insane to me -- in no other medium do you get that constant level of honest feedback directly from your audience. every week, the fans scream at the top of their lungs about what they love and what they hate. all you have to do is work them a bit before giving them what they want.

instead, vince kicks us in the dick all year and then expects us to lose our shit when he throws us a bone. by then, we're already deflated.

all that said, i'll be at the wwe live event this saturday for the LAST EVER EVENT AT JOE LOUIS ARENA! pretty historical night w/ brock lesnar headlining. it's gonna be fuckin' great. no matter how shitty the product is, with enough beer, live wrestling is almost always fun.
