#381 Re: The Garden » Volkswagen » 554 weeks ago

We have two of those cars that are affected (Audi A5 and VW CC, both with the same 2.0 liter diesel engine), and for the most part they are brilliant pieces of technology. However, given a choice, I'd never buy a diesel car again. We've known for years that they are more polluting than any other type of engine out there, and yet companies keep investing in the technology instead of focusing all their energy on modern electric, natural gas, hydrogen, ... technologies.

The funny thing is, there are 500 000 cars affected in the US (320 million people) while here in Belgium (12 million people) there are 400 000 cars affected... our government has been taxing gasoline cars for so long the fact that you buy a diesel car is the norm here. We also have the worst traffic jams of the western world, so you've got to wonder how much of an impact this has on our health and quality of life...

Adler didn't write the songs but he absolutely played a key part in the GN'R sound. As great as the songwriting itself is, they benefited from Adler's drumming on the album and in all those legendary club shows from the early days.

This, I absolutely agree with, Steven's drumming is an essential part of that appetite sound.

Matt Sorum was never able to recreate the same kind of energy on the Appetite songs.

This however... Matt is perfectly capable of replicating Steven's appetite groove and energy. On the songs where he wrote the drum parts, there's a distinctly different energy though, that's for sure.

This sounds like a win-win situation.

This is funny, for sure smile, but I think Corey is actually a very talented guy. I can enjoy Slipknot is small doses, and actually like the first two or three Stone Sour records very much. He's also pretty good as a solo act, when he does some of the more classic rock, grunge, non-metal, ... type stuff.

I never will understand why Slash rejected him as the VR singer.

I also cant imagine songs like Sorry being one of them either as any songs obviously about Slash would have been awkward to say the least.

I could imagine Axl having written the lyrics to Sorry post 2000, or even after the first Chinese Democracy tour where he was confronted with all those "where's Slash" T-shirts...

Agreed, but sans Pitman...

Yup, love him or hate him (he's way too 'enthusiastic' for my tastes... wink ), but his company makes some kick-ass guitars.

Try the g&l asat series...u prolly know, but it was Leo fenders company after he sold fender to cbs

The asat is the tele...legacy series is the made in Korea version or there is usa made...the legacy's are just what u get. ...the usa ones have a ton of options and I think they even have an ibanez wizard style of neck...if u go usa it's similar prices to usa fender buy if u find used they are less resale...just hard to find ur specs cuz basically everything is custom shop...albeit at fender production guitar prices

Well, turns out I'm a lucky guy... I had a birthday two days ago and my girlfriend bought me one of these babies: http://www.chapmanguitars.co.uk/guitars/ml-3-modern/

It's arriving tomorrow, can't wait to plug it into my Egnater.

All great points Neemo, and I'm happy that you love your guitars. Also, 'm not trying to make you regret spending the money smile, but I do think it's important to state for people in the market for a guitar that quality wise there's nothing wrong with the better specced Asian guitars. I don't want to perpetuate the myth that if you don't buy an American made guitar you by definition end up with an inferior product.

Regarding handmade products, you're kind of confirming my point with the quirks you'll find in those guitars. Ending up with a guitar with a slightly scalloped fretboard might be a nice surprise for some, but it could ruin the feel for others. Machine built guitars are predictably reliable and cheaper.

I'm in the market for a T-shape guitar right now, and I've looked at some Fenders, but even their Modern Player guitars still have a fairly chunky neck. The radius is a bit better and the heel is ever so slightly leaner, but the width of the fretboard is still too narrow for my liking and the pickup setup is 'meh'... Then there's the Telecaster HH guitars, which unfortunately come with the classic neck profile. The other brands don't fair much better either. ESP has tele's with a humbucker in the neck position (why??) but single coil in the bridge, or with two EGM's (which I already have in my LP, so I'd rather have something a bit different sounding). The chapman ML-3 comes superbly equipped and the bolt-on neck joint is beautiful, but they've arch-topped the body which looks atrocious on a tele-style guitar.

I don't know, the only reason I'm after a Tele shape is because I love the look of it, my wish list kinda reads like an SG type guitar in a Telecaster type body anyway...

I don't care too much about the wood since it only affects the look, weight and acoustic tone of the guitar (and perhaps the sustain a little bit in some cases). Pickup's only react to the magnetic field, so the amplified tone can't be affected by the choice of wood. And typically, wood that is glued together is stronger at the glue joint and less susceptible to warping, it is actually better to make a guitar out of multiple pieces of wood glue together than to make one out of one or two big chunks (and a lot cheaper too smile ).

Well, it doesn't matter so much where it is built as long as good components are used. What are some quality brands in your opinion? We used to have a Danish brand here, Bang Olufsen, but I see their selection isn't all that great. Pricy as hell too.

Well, if you're going for the absolute best in Picture quality you need to try and buy one of last year's Samsung 8000 series plasmas. But if you're looking for a decent quality set from a mainstream brand that is well built and will last at least 7 to 8 years (don't hope for much more, that's the spec these things are built to these days), I would say Sony is probably your best bet, followed by Panasonic, Sharp and Samsung (in roughly that order). I would stay away from LG TV's except maybe for their highest end sets. The B&O stuff looks great and is superbly designed, but that's really more of a lifestyle brand (plus rumor has it they are on the verge of bankruptcy). But if you're willing to spend a bit more and like superbly designed TV's ala Bang & Olufsen you should take a look at Loewe (http://www.loewe.tv).

I used to have an ltd mh1000 and it was a great guitar...but had fret issues. .odd that a 2010 guitar had frets wearing out within 4 years ...was still a $1000 guitar...still imo has a bit of a cheasy metal syltyle to them...never been a fan of the prs stuff the ones I have played haven't been all that great...granted my experience with them is limited...but again high end se guitars are still over $1k

My main guitar currently is an LTD ec-401fm, which looks slightly more aggressive than a Gibson styled Les Paul (http://im4.woodbrass.com/images/woodbra … TBLK-1.JPG). I've had it for 5 years now and it feels, sounds and looks brand new. I guess like with every brand (just look at the list of complaints about Gibson you listed yourself) you can have a bad one once in a while. I was actually looking to buy a Gibson Les Paul Standard when I bought the LTD but after playing both in the store the LTD played and sounded nicer to me. I payed about 600 EUR for it (so around 800 USD in those days), including tax. The Gibson would've set me back twice as much and actually comes with the exact same hardware (Grover) as the LTD. The EMG's in my LTD typically retail for 20$ more than the Seymour Duncans in the Gibson.

Neemo wrote:

Additionally, both PRS and ESP have guitars that match or exceed gibson and usa fender prices...so I'm not sure how valid your argument is

That's kinda my point though, I think those are overpriced as well. The only reason they are so expensive is because the production process is more expensive and they are produced in more expensive places (US and Japan respectively), not because there' anything inherently better about them.

Neemo wrote:

I'm of the opinion that if u want a gibson, get a gibson , don't get a prs cuz u think it's close to a gibson...

I fully agree with that, but I'm not really about buying a brand, I just want to buy a great guitar with the features that I'm looking for. For me that's a not too aggressive looking set neck or neck through guitar without tremelo and two aggressive-as-fuck sounding humbuckers. I should clarify, I love Gibsons, I have a 1979 Gibson The Paul (sort of a cross between a Les Paul and an SG) that for the longest time was my absolute favorite guitar. But honestly, with the price hikes in recent years, the difference between US made guitars and others is simply not worth it.

I'm not a Fender guy to begin with, they don't really make guitars that meet my preferences. The radius of the fretboard is too big, the width of the fretboard too narrow and the neck itself too think. Plus, that neck joint man... way too much wood down there for comfortable soloing in the high registers.
