Great posts.
I always think Axl writes about emotional concepts as they pertain across relationships. So like a song might be thematically about betrayal - and then it may have aspects of a lover betraying, a friend betraying, a time a person betrayed themselves etc. Or it might be about loss and it will be about all the different ways in which loss has been experienced.
So in that way I think something like hardskool can be about Izzy, Slash, maybe also himself or others all at once.

But the lyrics changed.
The lyric change wasn't when they added Slash and Duff though.
Don't forget there's 2 leaks around of Silkworms...the electronic version that closely resembles the 2001 era live version edition...then a later guitar version with Buckethead/Bumblefoot - not sure when this dates from but you'd assume 2006-2012 vintage.
The final version was basically the Bumble layout except with Slash and Duff swapped in.

I felt that way about "Shadow of Your Love" seeing as it was on the Live and Let Die CD single that I had on repeat in my youth....totally not new.
I'm giving Absurd a pass on that front though - as I don't count songs that have been performed live but not released - otherwise although not as long a wait...we'd technically have to say Don't Cry and NR were not new on UYI etc.
Also I actually want them to redo all the old CD demos like State of Grace etc with Slash....so yeah I see Randals point but I'm personally letting it slide lol

The fact that it's the "wrong" choice in a way is what makes it right.
Like too long has there been this psychotic pressure around GNR albums.
I mean we get one every 15 years. It's always like pulling teeth for us and I assume them.
Bands like metallica put out stuff all the time and go through phases and the world doesn't end. They'll do a hard rock phase and kirk will wear some nail polish, or they'll make a 3d movie, or they'll put out a poetry album or whatever. Because they are prolific they are also given some freedom to be artists and people carry on about how they suck since the first 4 albums or whatever but the train carries on.
In a way this is what GNR needs. Like in a way absurd is a good single choice cos it's not trying to be November Rain 2 or You Could Be Mine 2 or Sweet Child 2....it's just a song....it's a song they like...a song I like...it doesn't have to heal the world....maybe the less pressure that comes with doing something and not expecting it to be a world changer is actually what Axl needs to get more comfortable sharing his music again more often....who knows.

Well it's not officially Christmas...but the state I live in has a "lets lock down until we get back to zero" agenda...which will take a very long time with Delta and even if we can it's highly likely the other state that leaked it here in the first place will do so again cos our border controls are not smart.
Meanwhile the other state in a bad way has a lockdown (which our state considers too soft) that may or may not work...but is saying they will open up like the UK as soon as they can get the vax rate up...but then realistically between the vaccine hesitancy and the lack of government supply the timeline for that is kinda like october or november if not later.
Both these states are run by opposing political parties so whatever they do will be designed to shame the other. Like mine will lock down longer in the hopes to get lower numbers to prove the other opened up too fast, or, the other will open up faster to restore business faster to prove our lockdown wasn't necessary etc. It's all about politics at this stage sadly even though people are dying and there's a strong chance of more people dying if we don't work out a national plan that doesn't suck.

yeah it will start some shit here for sure.
Things are a bit fucked here at the moment.
Federal government fucked up our vaccine availability so pfizer etc is only available to some people. We only have about 24% of the population vaccinated. Madly playing catchup but it's dependant on supply.
Meanwhile they managed to let in the delta stain which is more contagious and partially vax resistant apparently. So our two states with the largest cities are in lockdown and probably will be until christmas. States all playing political games about who managing it better than who and who is to blame etc.
So yeah I wouldn't be surprised people are making crap decisions at this stage, it's a bit of a shit show here. But yeah...that will start shit...lets just say it's not the aussie way to murder a bunch of dogs for no reason. Someone fucked up hard.

For some reason I really like it.
I'm too old to headbang, but there's kinda a headbang moment as it slides back into the main riff each time after those little solo fills.
If i was going to change it I would have maybe given slash an entire section to shred more - like on stuff like perfect crime - maybe instead of one of the verse repeats...but it's fun as it is to me.
I can kinda see why people are not into it, but I just like the mood of it - and the drums and guitar riffs are cool - and I like the little Axl screams in the background too.

Even though bringing these threads back from the dead is annoying....What the hell happened to Axlin16?
In my mind he's still Axlin08
He was around about 3 years back when there were some leeks by the look of his post history....hopefully someone knows!
#459 Re: Guns N' Roses » Axl doesnt consider CD a guns n roses album anymore » 247 weeks ago
Yeah...the exclusion of Messages made zero sense. The only song from those sessions that had hit written all over it.
Libertad was such a strange time.
Such a weak album from such a powerful band, like VR were always amazing live but it sure didn't translate to those sessions.
It's not that they're bad exactly - it's just kinda like an album of B sides - from another band I would take it - but when you know the kinda Riffs slash was putting out only a couple of years after it makes you realise something was set wrong.
Then the live vibe is weird on bootlegs around that time too - so much chemistry still - but you can see they are not exactly getting on compared to the contraband shows.
Makes for a strange legacy...in that VR is one of the greatest bands I've seen - but you cant show that to someone by playing them the record one night...it's not really down on the tape...i was hoping Libertad was a slump and they were still to write their best stuff in a third album....but I think just too many drugs and politics at that point.
#460 Re: Guns N' Roses » Ron Thal talks "Absurd" » 247 weeks ago
The exact same Rolling Stone writers calling it a "classic punk track" with Slash on it would be calling it "Axl's delusional foray into industrial" with Bumble playing on it.
Well that's probably true.
Likewise I think the current shows wouldn't be getting the positive reviews without Slash and Duff.
It's one thing about reuniting, it takes the pressure of everything being 100% Axl even if he's still in charge.
Axl, Slash and Duff together can be given a lot more "benefit of the doubt" to the media than Axl alone.
