Great post. Don't agree with every single aspect of it, but it's a great take.
I personally think we need to stop the aid, pull out of virtually everywhere, lock the doors, become more self-sufficient, and go back to more of a early 1900's model of the U.S.
But that's just me.

Oh really? They still haven't done that and it's been years. Simple my ass. Simple for other bands yes, but not GNR.

Wasn't there something with MLB that has prevented the launch of a fully functioning website? Some will prolly cry "excuses, ecxuses!!". I tend to believe there's something to it.
When truly independent, setting things up like I described IS EASY!
When music is ready for release, Axl could just tell DJ or Jarmo (or both) "This and that are ready, set that shit up and pimp the fuck out of it!!
Even you James would be back in the happy-GNR-fan camp!!

Why? So the terrorists regroup, bomb more countries, then the world begs for us to send in our cavalry again?
While I do believe a pullout is warranted in the near future in Afghanistan, that certainly doesn't mean we just walk away. A change in strategy is what's needed, not surrender.

WHAT? Terrorist attacks on the United States and Russia have seen a decline since the war on terror started.
Appeasement doesn't work. Never has. Never will. Whether its an evil dictator like Hitler or a terrorist organization, they don't respond to acts of kindness. Violence is the only thing that gets the message across.
India, Ukraine, Tunisia and Egypt, all relatively peacefull revolutions. History are full of them!
Countries seem to have a problem with foreign armies invading their land with questionable motives.
Sure there are examples where military force/assistance seems to be the only alternative (WWII, Jugoslavia). The US' selfdeclared "War On Terror" is NOT one of them!

Sorry to bump an old thread...
I've only got a couple of NIN-albums in my collection, so I'm no diehard.
But I've read stuff about Trent pro-filming a bunch of shows and uploading them as torrents for the fans to edit their own live shows, submitting them to the band and the fans then voting on the best one (or something like that)
I'd love to check some of this out. Can someone educate me with some links or something?

Yeah and if he walked into a Reznor type situation, he doesn't know how to promote himself or his music in the 21st century climate.
I'm pretty sure he could manage.
If he went indie, it's just a matter of setting up a simple online store package your album(s) in multiple ways with extra stuff.
Even Baz seems to ship out his merch from his house himself (I think I've seen him tweet about it).
As for promoting that new stuff are available, some quick and easy FB- and twitter-posts would get the word out to millions of people!
Jarmo or DJ A$hba would prolly LOVE to be in charge of stuff like this!

A joint US/Russian operation in Chechnya that obliterates them with special ops and limited air strikes. Would send a HUGE signal to everyone. Then do the same to Somalia, Sudan,etc.
Who's going to resist such a conflict? The UN? EU? They both need us and Russia so resistance would be futile.

Sure it's easy to say that Axl should've gotten off his ass and he would be done with his contract with Universal. And there's no good argument against it. Except, it's my understanding that whenever you hand over an album to the label, it's not a given that they will just praise the heavens and release it. THEY have to agree that it's the "right" album.
Then you have a thing called timing. Like the rumor a little while back that Axl/GNR were recently ready to hand over a follow-up, but the label refused to release it due to no US-dates in sight. Sure, it was a foggy rumor, but the situation is plausible and understandble from the label's point of view.
