#551 Re: Guns N' Roses » Always baffled me - why Axl went for supermodels » 186 weeks ago
He's not like Di Caprio who's dating a new model every week. Seymor is the only real model Axl dated and he seems to have given up on women after that.
Why he did that I think is easy to understand. Average guy from a small town suddenly finds himself on top of the world. Of course you want a taste of all the best things the world has to offer, and for a young man with a nothing background, a female supermodel is the ultimate woman. I really don't think it's any different than Slash seeing a bag of raw, uncut heroin and going to town on that. The sensation is just too good to pass.
I also don't think there are many educated women hanging around rock stars hoping to suck their dick. When I was in school, the girls who would do that, were decidedly of the "b variant" both in terms of looks and intelligence.

The only way anyone is leaving is health issues or death. Would Duff still do it if Slash was out of the mix? Yes.
Would they do it without Axl is the big question.

2016 Axl was good on LALD…
It's pretty close to 2002. He also did his longest Jungle scream since 2006 that year.
Makes me think he can still sing pretty decent when he wants to. If he can preserve much of his power from 2002 to 2016, how credible is it that he lost most of his voice in the last 5 years? With AC/DC he sang better than he's done since the 90s.
Probably can't sustain it long which is why we don't see it live, but maybe a studio recording.

You wouldn't think it but this scream is actually longer than the Rio one. Not as powerful but more mean.
I think this is a good example to hear how Axl's voice had changed in the late 90s. He was still capable of rasp but his vocal chords had hardened and he only manages to get into that classic rasp at the very end of this scream. Rio is similar but this is more pronounced.
That tender rasp you only heard in the 80s.

It's a shame Axl let himself get heartbroken by an airhead call girl. Guess he was that struck. He banged so many chicks you'd think he would recognize those types.
I know there's rough spots but I'll take 91 over any other year.
I had literally stacks of bootlegs in the mid-late 90s and all my favorites were shows from 91 with a few from 87-89(Osaka, Chicago, LA). I also liked Argentina from either 92 or 93.
I remember one...I think it was titled God Bless America...that was from one of the Metallica shows. It's dreadful....I finally understood why fans were fleeing the venue not long into GNR's set.
It was raw, definitely. They still had the semblance of a gritty bar band and of course Izzy was around. While you had stuff later the famous St Louis was the peak of insanity for the band. Most Dangerous Band in the World was still a credible moniker. Kids must have been awestruck by all of this.
In 92 it was full on MTV with Freddie Mercury, VMA and Elton John. November Rain put them in the stratosphere. Axl dating a famous supermodel, Slash playing with Michael Jackson. In a few months they were completely transformed into this decadent big band.

Aside from messing up the bridge lyrics, it sounds great. Light years from the shitty Mickey vocals of 2022.
And he sings with so much venom, anger, and most importantly - conviction!
I love how he sings it!
It obviously sounds great compared to now. In the classic years though, 91 was weak for Axl. His voice was starting to go from singing incorrectly in the 80s and you can hear he is really struggling to get power into his voice. Raspy, too raspy.
In 92 he had learned to sing better.

Mate, I remember when that video dropped people were giving Axl shit, criticising his voice, the stumble where he couldn't get back up onto the stage, his weight… and now it's hailed as a classic performance.
I was probably one of those people. When RIO hit in 2001 I remember only thinking the new songs were good because Axl didn't sound like his old self on the classics. This was a fairly common opinion then. I played one of the songs to one of my army buddies and he thought Axl had lost his voice.
In 2006 it was a little similar, but there was also a growing number who said his voice was great. I thought it was just okay.
All of this is still true, but in relative terms you now notice the good parts about his voice back then and not caring so much about the bad (lack of rasp, out of breath). It IS a great performance, just not vintage great.

Imo this is the most powerful rock intro of all time.

No, I like Spaghetti and think the song fits well on there. On UYI it would be out of place.
It's a fantastic song though.
