#631 Re: Guns N' Roses » GNR’s and SLASH’s performance of Paradise City in HELLFEST, France » 724 weeks ago
I think I could some up my views on this thread like so:
I've never heard anyone play Slash's guitar parts as well as Slash does.
I've never heard anyone sing Axl's songs as well as Axl does.
I don't think I ever will.
This sums up my thoughts too.
I can see this thread ending badly.....

Instead of each guitar player getting a five minute solo trim that shit to an 8 minute spot where each guy gets to shine. Compose something together as a group and then perform it with each guy getting a solo spot within the composition they've created together..
That's a good idea, get them to do like a duelling guitars type of thing or something. Im sure they could compose something cool like that.
As for being past his prime vocally, sadly that's probably a vocalists lot. As you said as they get older their voice often doesn't hold up quite as well as in their youth.
Unlike say a guitarist that can get better with age (more experience etc), the vocalists "instrument" often starts to let them down. Nobody's fault, just the sad fact of ageing.

Personally I would prefer a shorter set list without all the solos. If I compare it to the UYI days, I would happily take the godfather theme and that's about it. You could stick Sorum's drum solo up his ass and on a good night I might want to listen to Gilby's Wild Horses.
All the solo spots make the show longer but not in a good way. IMO they break the momentum up and it's really stop/start. Plus your tired from standing and waiting, you want a piss etc. Now if it was long because they were pulling out rare songs and shit non stop then I could stand there and listen to it all night.
That said, I saw STP a year or so ago (can't recall). I thought they sounded awesome. Sonically they sounded just like their CD's, BUT I did kinda feel ripped off that they only played for about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Yeah touring is defintely where the dollars are now. The only question will be does he need to get back in the studio and release new stuff in order to reinvogorate his markets, so he can continue to tour strongly into the future.
I would hazard a guess that after the current tour dates are done he would be close to having saturated his traditional markets for the time being. So one would logically assume that a break from touring followed by some new material would be the next move. That should then give him the option to go out and tour again should he wish. But then again nothing they do seems too logical.
I would have to think though that endless touring without anything else would eventually lead to signifcant drop offs in crowd sizes at some point, if indeed he is not already reaching that point.

Ax needs to lay off the sauce during the shows....
Yeah maybe he has been getting liquored up a bit before the shows.

I know I shouldn't laugh but that looked bloody funny.
Sadly he didn't sound too great there either.

I just emailed you that Mr Brownstone remix Russ in mp3.
That was the one mixed by Michael Lardie and Alan Niven. It was the B-side on the first single It's So Easy.
The background to that was after a couple of weeks in the studio and getting nothing down on tape, Geffen was starting to get worried. Apparently Niv cleared the decks and he and Lardie did a quick and dirty mix of Mr Brownstone which they then sent on to Geffen. This had the desired effect of placating Geffen so they could get on with the job.
I don't mind that mix either. It also shows how it would be cool to hear some of that album remixed etc. Same with UYI, I remember Slash saying he had versions of the UYI album that were all stripped back and raw (before all the shit was added) would be cool to hear those. Although I vaguely recall reading Slash lost those DAT's??

I didn't mind the official video for WTTJ that came out with Live Era.
That and the redone It's So Easy one I think it was, give you a snippet of all the fucken footage they have in their vault.

Yeah if you lived nearby so you didn't have to worry about shipping costs it would be pretty cool to pick on up. Use it as a chest or a funky coffee table etc.

It seems like its probably Universal doing it independent of the band?
I would hazard a guess that they can repackage the same already released shit over and over to try and move units. But adding anything new (beyond a belt buckle lol) they probably need the ok from Axl and co.
