#6442 Re: The Sunset Strip » Baz blames internet for album tanking, no new album for "a LONG time" » 960 weeks ago

We won't lose our rockstars, just the ones nobody wants to hear from.  If you are good at whatever genre you're in musically, you will be successful.  Chart rankings are still relative to other current releases, not releases from the pre-internet era.  If you're 90th in the top 100 in sales today, you'd be roughly 90th out of 100 10 years ago.

The key is that you don't make your money on album sales anymore.  You have to do other things to support yourself.  Most artists are starting to get that, others are whining to the media.  Everything changes.  Ignore that and you become Bach - a once pretty good singer from a once pretty good band.  there's nothing wrong with that, but when your claim to fame outside of your 80s success is reality tv, licking Axl Rose's balls, and singing on Broadway, you can't expect to sell a million records just by putting Axl Rose on your album and going out of the way to tell everybody he's on it instead of talking about what you did.

Funny you mention that. Having not read the book myself, I honestly assumed there were no good parts about Axl in it, lol.

I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but he is pretty complimentary about Axl's singing and writing abilities.  He even goes out of his way not to mention personal things about Axl that he certainly could have gotten into about his past.  I think it's pretty obvious that Slash respects his talents and despises his attitude, which is the way I think a lot of people fall on the issue.  The only things he really bashes Axl about are blowing money on shit they don't need and not showing up/walking out of shows.

PS2 Still Most Popular Console
Other systems aren't being played as much as Sony's seven-year-old beast.

December 12, 2007 - The Nielsen Company has released several top ten lists for 2007 that reveal a variety of consumer trends related to media and technology. Among them is Videogame Console Usage from April to November that shows the PlayStation 2 is still enjoying the most use among consoles.

Nielsen measured the total amount of minutes its participants spent playing videogames, then divided those minutes between all current- and last-gen consoles. The PS2 obliterated the competition, claiming over 42 percent of all usage time. For each of the big three platforms, their last-gen predecessors saw more use than current systems. Here's how each console ranked:

Videogame Console Usage (April-November 2007)
1. PS2 - 42.2% of usage minutes
2. Xbox - 13.9
3. Xbox 360 - 11.8
4. GameCube - 7.1
5. Wii - 5.5
6. PS3 - 2.5
7. Other - 17.1

"Other" consists of any other console found in the home.

The data suggests that while the Wii has seen brisk sales this year, many of its purchasers don't play the console as often as those who bought a 360. It is also interesting to note the "other" category saw more use than the PS3, Wii, and GameCube combined.

Nielsen also revealed that Fresh Bread was the most popular consumer packaged good in 2007.

My theory on that is that it makes sense for the same reason I got a PS2 instead of an Xbox years ago.  You seem to be able to get more games for cheaper with the PS2.  So rather than playing the two or three games you've bought for the new system, people are playing from the pile of $20 PS2 games they've amassed over the years.

That's actually why I ultimately bought the PS3.  I have a ton of PS2 games I really enjoy and being able to still play them without having to keep the PS2 (my wife and I agreed to a 2 system limit and I've reached it so I have to give my PS2 away) swayed me to spend the extra money.  So far, the PS3 has been great for what I need it to do and I'm really looking forward to playing GH3 (PS3 version) on it.  I'm anxious to see what additional songs you can download.

Buzzsaw I like your MB20 list, but I'd put Feel, You're So Real and 3 AM in place of Busted, How Far We've Come and Bright Lights.  Just my opinion, of course.

It was actually a more difficult list than I thought it was going to be.  There are several other songs I would have loved to include and honestly my top 10 list is always changing.  If they hadn't made that 2nd album, I really think I could list any MB20 song on the other 2 albums and be pretty happy with the list.  For some reason I relate pretty well to most of the songs - even on the 2nd album...I just think the 2nd album is too mellow to have a whole album be that way.  Rob really comes off as a pussy.

some of the stuff i have heard about that is in this book, he talks about alot of things, from what i understand, things we've never heard about before....

but if "from Slash's perspective" is not the truth.. what good is it?   And if he is talkin about things we haven't heard before, how do we know its not more bullshit?    this book is to be read with a grain of salt.

I agree.  I'm a big Slash supporter and read it all with a grain of salt.  It was an interesting read, but it was full of his recollection of events - the same as Axl's or anybody else's book would be.  We will never get the real truth, so all we can do is read as much as possible and made educated guesses based off of the information we have.

An interesting side note: I haven't heard any Axl supporters ripping the parts of the book where he says good things about Axl.  Apparently the inaccuracies are limited mostly to bad things related to Axl.  It's good to know Slash's memory of the good things is so accurate and the bad things are foggy...this certainly increases the odds of a reunion down the road once he forgets all the bad Axl things.  16

#6448 Re: Guns N' Roses » Remember this document? » 960 weeks ago

Axl is free to say fuck it and blow off the fans, but he has to live with the concequenses of his actions.  He's treated the fans like shit for years going all the way back to the UYI days - even those that have stuck with him through all the fuckin shit.  If he wasn't expecting a backlash as a result, then he underestimated his fan base.  You can only shit on people for so long before they are going to say enough.  The truth is that the fans don't need Axl - good or not so good, there are other musical options out there - but if Axl wants to continue living the lifestyle he wants to live, he sure as hell needs the fans.

Axl deserves much of the flack he gets.  The members of the band deserve at the very least some of the flack they get, though they are more victims of Axl's lunacy then they are at fault for any of this.  The people around him deserve all of the flack they get - the leeches need to learn to shut up.  People have a right to be disappointed that this isn't really the Guns N' Roses they fell in love with.  If that's enough for Axl to say fuck it, then fuck him.  It's apparent that as much as he's always wanted to be the lone person in the spotlight, he can't handle it and everything that goes with it.

Short of Axl's death, the best chance we have for ever seeing CD released is a long period of silence followed by doing things right for once.  Change the musicians from employees to band members and reward their loyalty and patience.  Finish the album in the quiet time.  Prepare the marketing and promotion plans.  Release the best song you have as the 1st single followed by an album release within the next 2 months.  Tour to support the album, not the salaries of the musicians.  Give back to the fans that have supported your existance for what could be 20 years at that point.  Treat the fans with respect before demanding they respect you.  Anything less than this will result in failure in my opinion.

Matchbox Twenty

1. Back to Good
2. Long Day
3. Soul
4. Bright lights
5. Real World
6. Damn
7. All I Need
8. How Far We've Come
9. Real World
10. Busted

When I first heard Back to Good, it was at a time in my life when I was spending a lot of time getting drunk because I wasn't very happy with where I was in life but didn't know how to fix it.  I was working a job I hated and engaged to someone I didn't really want to marry, but I felt I owed it to her because she saved my life.  So I would sit in the bars wondering what it would be like to be with some of the other women at the bar instead of where I was at the time, so the song struck a nerve for me.
