METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX: 'Big Four' U.S. Dates Coming Soon - Jan. 24, 2011

An image has been uploaded to METALLICA's official web site promoting the upcoming U.S. leg of the touring rock festival featuring the "Big Four" of 1980s thrash metal — METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX — with the words "Coming Soon" above it. No further details are currently available.

The two-disc DVD release of "The Big Four: Live From Sofia, Bulgaria", containing footage of the June 22, 2010 Sonisphere cinecast from the Sofia, Bulgaria leg of the "Big Four" tour has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments in excess of 100,000 copies. (Note: Due to the fact that the set consists of two discs, it was eligible for platinum certification after shipping 50,000 copies; platinum certification for a single-disc release is 100,000 copies.)

"The Big Four: Live From Sofia, Bulgaria" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard "Top Music Videos" sales chart in November with first-week sales of 22,000 copies. The set also debuted at No. 1 in Canada, the U.K. and Austria, while entering at No. 4 in Germany.

The show was part of a two-week European tour featuring the four biggest names from the Eighties thrash metal era. The idea first came up last year and METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio he was glad to finally see it happen. "It's pretty amazing if you think about it, that it's the first time basically in 25 years or 30 or whatever that the four of us have actually played shows together," he said. "So it was a lot of fun, a lot of memories, a lot of fun times — new fun times, and fun times talking about the old fun times. So it sort of was a, it was a winner on every front."

A short audio clip of Ulrich talking about the "Big Four" tour is available at this location (Real Media).

"The Big Four: Live From Sofia, Bulgaria" set features full shows from all four bands along with behind-the-scenes and interview footage.

A "Big Four" tour of other parts of Europe is being planned for this summer.

METALLICA finished out its "Death Magnetic" touring cycle in November in New Zealand and Australia, but is already confirmed to headline the Rock In Rio festival in Brazil on September 24, 2011.

METALLICA Drummer Explains Decision To Play One 'Big Four' U.S. Show: 'Let's Take Baby Steps' - Jan. 26, 2011
As first reported on Tuesday (January 25), METALLICA has announced the details of the U.S. leg of the "Big Four" tour, which unites Eighties thrash metal legends METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX on stage for the first time. Disappointingly, however, there will only be a single North American gig for now, on Saturday, April 23 at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California — the same location where the Coachella festival takes place every year.

During an appearance on yesterday's edition of "The Kevin & Bean Show" on the Los Angeles radio station KROQ-FM (106.7), METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich explained the decision to play only one U.S. show, stating, "Let's take baby steps here. We did seven or eight [Big Four' dates] last year, we're doing one show in England and one show in France [this year]."

He added, "Listen, we don't wanna cram this down people's throats. We don't wanna sort of overstay the welcome, and we don't know what kind of response there's gonna be to this in America, so we're starting, obviously, without being disrespectful to the rest of the wonderful country...

"We have a history in Southern California, SLAYER has a history in Southern California, [MEGADETH mainman and former METALLICA member Dave] Mustaine has a history in Southern California, so there's a lot of history in California. And we picked, obviously, the Coachella site where this is going down the week after the Coachella, [which] is probably — along with Bonnaroo — the favorite festival site to go to in North America.

"I went and saw RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE a couple of years ago out there at Coachella and just thought it was a brilliant, brilliant place, so when the Coachella organizers asked us if we would come and play there the week after and they would leave the scaffolding up and all that business, it just seemed like a great way to kick this off in North America.

"If there is enough demand for it, obviously there's a very strong possibility that there'll be more shows, but we don't wanna overextend the welcome and we also don't wanna turn it into something that becomes this whole nostalgia trip that's gonna sort of be, 'Okay, now it's just gonna be this for the next few years,' and 'Celebrate the past.' So it's a balancing act, you know."

'The Big Four: Live From Sofia, Bulgaria' To Premiere On PALLADIA, VH1 CLASSIC In March - Feb. 2, 2011
According to Elliot Levin of the New York Hard Rock Examiner, footage of the June 22, 2010 Sonisphere cinecast from the Sofia, Bulgaria featuring the "Big Four" of 1980s thrash metal — METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX — will premiere on MTV Networks channels Palladia and VH1 Classic this March.

MTV confirmed today that select songs from each band, as well as the lauded group jam on DIAMOND HEAD's "Am I Evil?", will first air on March 19.

The footage has become a best-selling DVD and Blu-ray title and was simulcast live in movie theaters across the country, but this will mark the first time it airs on a basic cable channel and at no extra cost to the viewer. In an added bonus, the footage will air in high definition on Palladia, which prides itself on HD concert content.

Preceding the hour-long the "Big Four" special will be additional footage of other bands and performances from Sonisphere, including ALICE IN CHAINS, MÖTLEY CRÜE and more.

The so-called "Big Four" are arguably the biggest and longest-lasting acts to emerge from the thrash/speed metal underground of the late '80s, but never shared a stage together until last year.

MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE Interviewed On GRAMMY 'Red Carpet'; Video Available - Feb. 14, 2011
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine was interviewed on the red carpet at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards, which was held last night (Sunday, February 13) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. You can watch the chat below.

MEGADETH was nominated for the ninth time this year but ended up losing the award in the "Best Metal Performance" category to IRON MAIDEN.

For Mustaine, it was only the second visit to the awards, with 2010 being his first time finally making the trip. Why did he hold out so long? "Our band started off playing music that was actually directly opposed to the establishment; this kind of glitzy stuff," Mustaine told AOL's Noisecreep. "So we didn't show up the first several nominations. It wasn't proper for our ilk to be here. Now it's like we come because our kids want to be here."

When asked what he throught of his first visit to the Grammys in 2010, Mustaine replied, "It sucked 'cause we lost."

The nominees in this year's "Metal" category were as follows:

* IRON MAIDEN - "El Dorado" (from "The Final Frontier")
* KORN - "Let The Guilt Go" (from "Korn III: Remember Who You Are")
* LAMB OF GOD - "In Your Words" (from "Wrath")
* MEGADETH - "Sudden Death" (from "Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock")
* SLAYER - "World Painted Blood" (from "World Painted Blood")

Material released between September 1, 2009 and September 30, 2010 (a 13-month period) was eligible for the 2011 Grammys.
