Axl was still trying to get BH back up until like a week before that show

I still get a laugh out of this. I used to think it was a sign of how crucial he was to the project and they wanted him back...now I see it as the sign of desperation that it really was.

The situation goes from Duff(and potentially Slash) in the mix to Axl telling Finck and Fortus they're the lineup he always wanted to hiring Bumblefoot out of the blue one minute til midnight.

The cherry on top is this was all occuring right before the big comeback.

He didn't know what the hell he wanted...and it's why I'm not surprised by those Merck comments Blackstar posted about Axl being open to a reunion.

No shit he was open to it...he was juggling lineups and scenarios up until taking the stage.

It was in all those GNR emails and other stuff during that leak. The source was MSL.

Oh yeah, I have seen those somewhere, but I thought that the alleged email about Duff was from 2009 (?)

I think it was. I'm pretty sure that leak contained all of that stuff over the years compiled into one folder.

It also included all the song titles for a potential second album.

Found the list:

https://web.archive.org/web/20211111082 … c/?p=33504

The emails in it that were (allegedly) about Duff (doesn't look to me that there were referring to 2006):

014. October 2009 Axl email to Bumblefoot about Duff rejoining
075. October 2009 Axl email about Duff wanting back in and people wanting Tommy out (part 1)
076. October 2009 Axl email about Duff wanting back in and people wanting Tommy out (part 2)
077. October 2009 Axl email about Duff wanting back in and people wanting Tommy out (part 3)

I don't think Duff was close to going back in 2006. The 2005-2006 reunion affair was mostly a Slash thing and maybe Duff was dragged into it for a little while.

But after VR broke up Duff started sending friendly messages to Axl through interviews (although he had always been diplomatic, his public comments became noticeably and considerably reconciliatory after 2008) and then Axl kind of responded in early 2009 with "Slash is a cancer, but Duff can join us on stage if he wants."

Probably Duff started consciously working towards a GN'R reunion when he realized that Slash was not willing to put VR back together with a new singer (Slash was basically the reason VR didn't find a singer because he rejected them all). And then there was that "coincidental" meeting with Axl in London in 2010.

Titles that were later verified years later with the 2019 leaks like Perhaps & Tonto. Means either that list of song titles was legitimate OR MSL knew about/had some tracks long ago and sprinkled them into some elaborate fake. I think the former though.

IIRC that list had stuff like ChiDem2 Better2 etc on it as well. Maybe Axl also wanted to release newer versions of those songs?

If you then think about how Absurd is near identical to the BBF demo… what if the reworked Better intro predates the NITL reunion?

The 2006 info mentions Duff doing rehearsals, he can't learn all the songs quick enough, so he exits stage left and Tommy is brought back after being fired.

Does anyone still have that 105 page PDF that the Chairman leaked? That's where the info came from.

Word to the wise...

Never delete any leaks because you never know when you might want a second look.

When looking through the list on metal sludge, I got a laugh out of this...

The info flows seamlessly into the so called remix album idea that was shit canned.

It probably wasn't the worst idea in the world... until you realize that mountains of copies of Chinese Democracy are rotting in Best Buys nationwide to the point they will be shipped to Dollar Stores nationwide to rot.

Those kinds of albums usually don't get the remix treatment...or immediate follow up albums.

Thanks! Yeah,I remember downloading that pdf document and reading through it, so I have it somewhere. But I take all this "insider" information with a big grain of salt...

Yeah me too...but like Axl S mentioned above..a lot of the info wound up being true.

In hindsight it's not surprising. Various band members (among others) were frustrated with the situation. Hell...they were kept so far out of the GNR loop they would sometimes ask forum members/insiders for info!

People in such circumstances are likely to start talking at some point. Sometimes band members say things that are more revealing than they appear on the surface. A good example is when Dizzy went to that frat party in early 2006 a month or two before the leaks/Hammerstein. He was asked the last time the band had been together. This was asked expecting a tidbit of info on whether they were about to tour(no one knew at the time) or an album update.

His answer?

2002.

This is revealing for obvious reasons...

- The "hard at work on Chinese Democracy 24/7" myth  has now been shattered.

- If they haven't been together for four years...what in the hell have they been doing?

- With that little contact with the GNR camp, can any of their past or current updates (at the time) be trusted?

- If something is going on, would they even know?

Pretty interesting info to learn thanks to a simple answer from a drunk Dizzy to a frat boy.

Had the leaks not happened however many weeks after this, it would've become a much bigger deal than the mere footnote of 2006 it became.

Pretty sure Duff was in the “new lineup” even before the reunion.

Yeah...a few shows during the Ashba years. What a waste. I'd love to have known his honest feelings on that lineup. He had one reason to be involved...as the bridge between Axl and Slash.

I'd love to see the alternate timeline where
Duff learns the songs in 2006 and Tommy doesn't come back...no offense to Tommy.

Regardless of what happened or any tension with Slash, this allows a speed run towards the reunion.

Imagine opening night at Hammerstein when everyone is speculating on who it's going to be...

Axl, Duff, and Izzy are onstage. Only thing standing in the way of a reunion is Finck..and he tires of it and is gone in a year...maybe quicker in this scenario. Bumblefoot too but it's easy peasy to drop the 3rd guitarist slot.

Tommy was the leader of all those versions of GNR
he was the one running the whole show
you can especially hear it if you listen to the in-ear monitor sound boards
