Police arrested a man for shoplifting razors at a Beverly Hills drugstore last month and, when they also found meth on him, he told them they were arresting former Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland.

The authorities were so pleased with their catch that they even put out a press release titled "Celebrity Arrest," according to TMZ, bragging about the arrest. The man they've had in custody since July 26th, though, who's been unable to post $95,000 bail, is not Scott Weiland.

The singer recently posted a video to Facebook from the studio to decry the original TMZ post saying he was in jail. "I just got done reading something very interesting, a nice piece of fiction from TMZ, saying that I was in jail and had been for four [weeks]," he said. "I've actually been touring, writing and recording my new album. Yeah, this is the studio we're in right now. So all I have to say to our fans is whether you find it funny or interesting or whether you're sad, don't worry, don't fret, it's a lie. TMZ, you'll be hearing from my attorneys."

Likely confused, TMZ then reached out to the police, who claimed they had performed a "physical check" and that Weiland was indeed "definitely" in their custody. Later, though, they issued a mea culpa.

The gossip site learned through an FBI fingerprint check that the man they've had in custody for nearly a month is a Weiland doppelgänger named Jason Michael Hurley. Where Weiland is 46, Hurley is 44. Where Weiland has black hair now, Hurley has red hair (as though he were still stuck in the group's 1993 "Plush" video.

Since being kicked out of Stone Temple Pilots with a bizarre series of lawsuits and countersuits with the band over the past year, eventually claiming that the group will have to "buy me out of the company," the singer has been staying out of the tabloid headlines and touring around the U.S. and Canada. The day before police arrested Hurley, Weiland was in Marksville, Louisiana, playing a variety of STP, Velvet Revolver and David Bowie songs, according to SetList.fm.
