Been watching some random late 90s-early 2000s football during the week. It's wacky how hindsight allows you to see everything....

Remember how Jon Kitna came out of nowhere and was supposed to set the league on fire? He never truly ignited.

How about Gus Frerotte? I will say this about him...there was some potential there. Bad timing, wrong teams. Testaverde is the poster boy of this.

Here's another doozy I had forgot....David Gerrard. Coughlin was right...THIS guy should've been the successor to Brunell. It's still a damn good team at that point. Coughlin gets fired, they draft Leftwich...also a good QB...and the Jags fall into that rut that happens with average/mediocre teams where they can't figure out which guy is the present/future of the team.

They wind up twiddling their thumbs while their Super Bowl window gets quickly painted shut.

I've always felt bad for the Jags.... specifically the late 90s Jags. That was their moment. Unfortunately for them, they couldn't seize the opportunity and had no idea Manning and Brady were about to dominate the AFC.

Feel the same about the Titans from that period. They don't see the massive shift coming so there's no real pressure to win NOW.

Watching the late 90s/early 2000s Dolphins with hindsight is bizarre. You can see what they're doing...Johnson/Wannstedt are building an iconic defense to prepare to dominate. The problem is everything else is going to shit and now isn't the time to be running in place...the Pats are about to completely own this division.

The Bills are worse...their window was wide open in 98-99...they shit  the bed benching Flutie...and the aftermath is a team with a handful of major pieces but they just rot while the Pats ascend. One more thing....Bledsoe was NOT the answer.

The Jets were the Jets.

It's an interesting division in this timeframe. You can see step by step how Belichick/Brady were quickly able to dominate the division to the point their Super Bowl window would be open for a virtual eternity.

It's reminiscent of the 1980s NFC West....where the 49ers are so far ahead of their division rivals that it's practically a bye into the playoffs.

When you can throttle the entire division at will, you only need a few more wins to get into the playoffs.

Edit

One more thing....

Broncos...

What a fuck up starting Griese after Elways retirement instead of letting Bubby Brister have a shot.

He earned a chance IMO....went 4-0 as the starter when Elway was out during 98... keeping the machine turning.

That team was still too good to just throw it in the hands of someone completely untested and hope for the best. If not Brister, bring in someone else.

Crazy morning/afternoon....

Upset of the week...

Redskins shock the Seahawks.

Bengals no longer undefeated...praise Jesus. Love it when the Bengals lose on Burrow turnovers.

The Pats are in BIG trouble. They need to figure out their issues quickly.

Jets almost came away with the upset. I was praying for it. With the Bears currently in some limbo, Lions and Vikings need to lose for awhile.

Browns beat the Panthers. If the Browns can miraculously go on a run, that division will become a 4 way bloodbath.

The Chiefs machine continues turning. Not good for the rest of the league.

Chargers failed their first obstacle in the gauntlet. In their defense, they came close. I wanted to watch this whole game but there were too many close games going on.

Those Bills alternate uniforms/helmets are AWFUL.

Colts barely beat the Texans...who are now 0-3.

Vikings just traded JJ McCarthy to the Giants for a 5th round pick.

Even with the drama surrounding him, hard to believe he's only worth a 5th round pick. The salaries/values of NFL players is completely out of wack.

If Harbaugh is smart... he'll start him immediately. Don't waste anymore time with Jameis Winston. The season isn't beyond saving....YET. With any luck, JJ will have something to prove and they can go on a run.

Before Dart went down, I had them winning the division. There's still a faint glimmer of hope now.

That Broncos -Rams game was one of the best of the year. If you missed it, go watch the highlights.

Ravens pulled off a last minute win in Brazil.

Raiders continuing their unlikely run. Gonna get intetesting if it continues.

Vikings won again....Bucs are in big trouble.

Bears have now won games with all 3 QBs this season. It feels like a fever dream. The sky was falling when Caleb went down.

Just keep on chugging....

Chiefs are back....but that Raiders team is for real.

I predicted the Jets or Raiders would be the surprise team out of nowhere to get to the playoffs....

Looks like it's going to be the Raiders.

Panthers actually played well. Lions are in some trouble. Gibbs couldn't get his motor running and that defense isn't going to stop any playoff caliber team. They'll have to win shootouts.

Chargers are FUCKED. Yeah they had a bit of a rally late in the game but they're done.

Same with the Texans. This clearly isn't last year where they're going to ride their defense on a win streak into the playoffs.

That defense has regressed...and Stroud simply can't dig them out of this hole.

Pats upset the Bills in a must win game. Now some of the heat will cool on Maye and maybe he can get his shit together.

That Josh Allen INT was a rookie mistake. No reason to throw that.

Jayden Daniels out...now Mariota is out....Redskins are pretty much done for the season.

That Niners team is scary. A weapon at every position.

The Broncos flirting with mediocrity is not that surprising IMO.

Vikings squeak out a win with 5 field goals. IMO that might be the worst undefeated team (at this point in a season) in history. Yeah the defense is good...but no stability anywhere else.

Bengals lose again on a last second TO. Love it.

The Jaguars need to move up in the power rankings. They're quietly becoming one of the elite AFC teams.

Falcons - Saints tonight.  I'm picking the Saints but it's a coin flip. That division will go down to the wire just like last season.

I rescind my prediction that the Saints would win this division....

The defense is mediocre at best...and my great grandma could've rushed for more than 16 yards.

I’m not surprised at some of the results/happenings over the weekend.

Vrabel has this really habit of just coaching up his team and either beating teams or coming close on matchups that look like total mismatches on paper.  He did it again this week.

The Broncos have pulled off the Houdini dog shit luck act for the last year and I don’t think it’s gonna hold up anymore .  It’s basically like this , Nix plays like crap for 3 quarters and the defense keeps it close (or gets turnovers) and Nix turns it on and they come back and win.   They got good injury news when Surtain ankle injury wasn’t season ending (looked awful when I first saw it). Anyway back to Nix ; his total season stats are 600 yards and 4 tds.  That’s awful for a “star” qb.

Chargers are just fucking awful.  They really can’t dump Herbert  until after 2027 though .    They will probably that a WR with that high first rounder .

MIA and maybe TEN are in the lead for that.  HOU can’t comeback this year .  JAC is a top level AFC team and IND is at least average .  I wouldn’t be surprised if they lost to TEN.  Titans are at least competitive this year.

Yeah, the Vikings aren’t not wining long term through this year because that offense is mediocre and the competition  is gonna heat up ; IND,SF GB again in the coming weeks.

Detroit ain’t winning shit that secondary is awful.  Even with that offense, I can only see 6-8 wins.  They have stayed mainly healthy.  Unless they trade for a CB , they are gonna be in shootouts .

Early game of the year is this week’s NFC west clash between SF and Seattle.  The Rams are still behind those two even if they have higher star power.

Bengals lost again when Burrow couldn’t complete the comeback again on the last drive .  I still think they will get to the playoffs but it’s going to be tight.
