What is the actual reason it's good to have really soft bits and really loud bits in a song?
Hedonic adaptation. That is to say, the Human Experience has all the peaks plateaued. In terms of entertainment, you need to wind back and release again to support a rhytmic impact on the spectator.
It's relative, of course. Megadeth does it different from Bach, and dynamic range is not the only way in music to accomplish that; it just visualizes the peaks and the valleys, which makes it easy to work with them.

Ludwig says Axl had CD mastered in "quite a few places" before coming to him, which is really a suitable piece of the album's lore. Picture this; Azoff, Uni and BestBuy come to a deal, November launch, big money. Everybody wins. They turn to Axl... who's still running around wild trying to put the album together, running the final mixes through multiple mastering houses. If there ever was an "obsessive genius" period, Axl sure as hell plowed through it with CD.
Bob's reactions are cute; note his expression as he puts away from the CD intro. The dude may consider Axl to be a bit loony (now when's that ever happened), but he appears sincerely fond of his work on the album, nor is he sounding embarrassed about the musical side.

Those guys weren't born yesterday, they know how it's looked at.
Wait for the Axl pic before getting excited, tho.

Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but congrats nevertheless.

American colleges seem to have a relaxed admissions policy (to put it mildly), so the Net is overpopulated by morons with free access and nothing better to do all day. Consequently, it's like being in a library with twenty million people shouting at each other. These are people who have never had sex and probably never will.

This is getting interesting.
I raise you A by saying the subject of common interest in any Web Community is also a vehicle for other issues. People are increasingly unsatisfied with what they have (in terms of wealth, debt, living conditions, etc.) and what they are being promised (in terms of the future). Hating the hard-to-pin-down outside world may cause one to vent on his/her hardships on that elusive figure of personal idol, be it a wrestler, rock star or a golfer.
If people would take up their personal lives in a more hands-on fashion, they'd notice 15 years on an album is not really their problem; it's the problem of those directly involved, who already get all the bitching in the world behind the scenes. But, complaining is caring and drawing the line is hard at times.
Carry on.
#1067 Re: The Sunset Strip » John Lyndon (The Sex Pistils) » 683 weeks ago
People think axls a wanker hes got nothing on john
He's John Lyndon of the Sex Pistils as much as Axel Rose is of Guns and Roses.
It's part of the concept of British rock stars to be a bit pompous; Lydon's always been that way. I don't worship him blindly, but he's a productive artist who founded an ambitious musical project (PiL) following the Pistols' meltdown, and has continued to live up to his legacy by both giving the fans a Pistols reunion (admittedly, a cash-grab) and keeping PiL active despite personnel changes.
He can be a bit of a hypocrite at times, but Axl would have a thing or two to learn from him.

DJ mimicking slash on stage is simply giving the audience a taste of what they want.
I agree Robin tried to make the parts "his own", but, I question the wisdom of that when 95% of the show (in his era) was covers of the old band.
That was not the original intention. The fact that the album never appeared during Robin's time in the band left everybody a bit cut n' dry. With a new album to illustrate the new Guns sound, people would've been more forthcoming with Robin's take on the old songs, as in the live sound was to be consistent with the new album.
As for what DJ brings, on a record his appearance and visual slash homage won't matter, and he's a skilled guitarist - he's shown he can write modern yet classic styled rock songs suitable for Sixx:Am and Motley. (ie: When he writes as Sixx:Am song it suits that band, when he writes for motley it sounds like motley, ergo, his GNR contributions would be styled like GNR). While he maybe doesn't have outright virtuoso chops of a Buckethead or Bumble - neither do most lead guitarists - and you're already going to have bucket and bumble on the record anyway....so I'm sure it's harmless for DJ to add in his own feel to things.
I'd like to see this band get into a room and write songs. The previous (2001) lineup had loads of writing talent. Bucket and Brain in the same band pretty much guarantees you a steady progression of wall-to-wall ideas, many of them delightfully loony, as well as some hard-hitting rock. They could've taken the band anywhere had Axl only let them. This current lineup lacks the comparable merits (sorry Bumble), but they could compensate with a strong group effort.

The best public faces of GNR in the CD -era.
