#101 Re: Guns N' Roses » Perhaps (2023) to Drop » 98 weeks ago

People pointed out John5 being in the video. The guy is pretty social, so it's no surprise that he should know GNR, *but* I was looking through old notes and found this circa the "No Trickery" shows. No proof if it's true and NOT my words, just something I read:

Axl texted Josh Freese if he could talk to Bucket for him and to tell bucket to give him a call. Asked Josh if he knew any other guitar players, Josh said John5, and Axl said we auditioned with him but it didn't work out.

That sounds wild! The final version is better but wow, what a revelation. And Rick’s keyboards sound terrific.

Axl needs to divide up the chorus of “Hard Skool” as well. Give himself a chance to breathe and sound strong.

Axl:But you had to play it cool

Duff/Melissa/Dizzy: had to do it your way

Axl: Had to be a fool

Duff/Melissa/Dizzy: had to throw it all away

Axl: Too hard school

Duff/Melissa/Dizzy: and you thought you were here to stay

Axl: If that were true

Duff/Melissa/Dizzy: it wouldn't matter anyway

This way he sounds his best, they seem more like a BAND, and the lyrics take on an extra bite.

Chinese Whispers is an amazing work of … there is no other word for it: scholarship.

That is professional level work. I still jump into it when I need to track down some piece of information.

When you compare the Rolling Stone article about the storage locker leaks which got SO MUCH WRONG vs. Chinese Whispers, Chinese Whispers wins by so much.

It seemed like GNRSource got hacked. One day it caused all sorts of security warnings to appear and then was gone shortly thereafter. A real drag.

#104 Re: Guns N' Roses » The General confirmed next » 98 weeks ago

GNRSource got shut out of the Dexter chats as well. That was my hangout before I discovered this place.

I had seen the "approved" sites but could tell they were political, especially when the leaks happened and they stifled all discussion. GNRSource was much cooler, not as easy to control, and allowed freedom of speech.

Someone in authority decided to make them pay for it. A dick move.

When I see MyGNR go on lockdown every time something interesting happens, like they are right now, I am reminded that I made the right choice. What are new fans or old fans rediscovering the band supposed to think?

They probably will decide they are not welcome elsewhere.

You're all welcome here.

I included "Nothing" in the list of storage locker tracks with vocals, but have not read of it being finished beyond what we've heard.

They really could use it as-is, as a sort of weird interlude or unlisted track. Clear listeners' heads for the next big song.

Melissa would be great to handle that

Her, Duff, and Dizzy as a Greek Chorus! It would sound and look cool onstage. Like the accusing voices in the "Trial" section of The Wall.

Full live version with Axl's spoken intro:

I am even more convinced that he needs to hamd off the "Hey, hey"s and alternate lines in the chorus (think of how Pink Floyd performed "Run Like Hell"). It's too many words without a moment to breathe.

Make it a duet with Duff and the song becomes a conversation, taking on a whole new level of meaning.

Right now, we have heard or are about to hear nine songs with vocals not yet on an album: The four songs chosen for release on singles, plus four storage locker vocal tracks and "Oh My God." This gets us to:

"Hard Skool" -- 3:41 (storage locker leak was 4:12)
"Absurd" -- 3:23 (storage locker leak was also 3:23)
"Perhaps" -- 3:44 (storage locker leak was 4:02 with a longer outro)
"The General" -- duration unknown
"Atlas Shrugged" -- 4:16 on storage locker leak
"Eye on You" -- 3:47 on storage locker leak
"State of Grace" -- 4:10 on storage locker leak
"Nothing" -- 3:56 on storage locker leak
"Oh My God" -- 3:40

Right now we know of about 31 minutes of music that has vocals, plus "The General." If "epic" suggests one of Axl's intricate arrangements, it may run 5 minutes or more. To be conservative, let's say for now it is 5 minutes long, so we will have 9 songs running approximately 36 minutes.

It seems 10 or 12 songs is the bare minimum of tracks for an album these days, so to hit that threshold the band would need as little as one, two, or three more songs. Considering how long it has been between albums, they probably need to find a sweet spot between quality and quantity: Only release good stuff, but release enough good stuff that fans are satisfied, radio stations (including streaming) have a lot of options, and the band adds some choice cuts to its live repertoire.

They also deserve at least one more great record in their discography which will reset the clock since 2008 and the release of ChiDem.

It might be helpful to organize and discuss the tracks.

Songs completed with Duff and Slash:

"Absurd" (Originally "Silkworms" on Rough Mixes 1 storage locker CD)
"Hard Skool" (Originally "Hardschool" on Rough Mixes 3 storage locker CD)
"Perhaps" (Originally on Rough Mixes 1 storage locker CD)
"The General"

Unreleased storage locker leaks with Axl vocals:

"Atlas Shrugged" (On Rough Mixes 1 storage locker CD)
"Eye on You" (On Rough Mixes 2 storage locker CD but partially sampled for "Absurd")
"State of Grace" (On Rough Mixes 3 storage locker CD)
"Nothing" (On Rough Mixes 4 storage locker CD)

Songs not yet announced for release which may have vocals that we have not yet heard:

Axl's 2008 post as Dexter confirmed several unreleased song titles. (Here is his comment, in full: http://www.gnrevolution.com/viewtopic.php?id=5578). These included several storage locker tracks listed above as well as "The General" but for clarity, here is the list:
"Ides Of March"
"Oklahoma"
"Atlas Shrugged"
"Oh My God"
"Silkworms"
"Down By The Ocean (Izzy)" <--Axl notably added "Izzy" in his response
"Leave Me Alone"
"Seven"
"The General"
"Thyme"
"Quick Song"
"Zodiac"

Apparently a cellphone photo of a stapled fax machine document which may have been fake circulated online in 2019. This is said to have included 25 song titles, most from ChiDem or included in the storage locker leaks, with these notable additions:
"Dragon"
"All I Ever Wanted"
"Seven"

A screenshot of a 2008 email which may have been fake circulated online in 2019. Can someone verify this at all? Suposedly this included the titles of several released songs as well as storage locker instrumental tracks, but the implication here is that all of these songs have vocals. Here is the reported list, in full, since it has letter codes that imply something that may prove to be important later:
Cuban Skies V
The General Ch V
