#121 Re: Guns N' Roses » DJ ASHBA: AXL ROSE wanted me to be a part of GNR Reunion » 479 weeks ago
I have mixed views on DJ.
When DJ joined at first I thought it was positive that he stuck closer to the source material than Robin - I know you guys characterise it as Robin putting his own character into the songs - but to me it felt about as appropriate as it would be for Myles Kennedy to put his own spin on Brownstone by adding a new verse. That's just not how the songs go.
However DJ kinda took it too far - as it times it felt to me like his stage act was actually mimicking slash to an unnatural degree....it made the band seem inauthentic.
That said the hate for him is way out of line. He's a nice guy - and he can't help that he isn't slash - also the problems with his act were not entirely his own fault - his solo spots showed some talent - and I can't help but think if Axl had written some songs with him - if the band was still properly functional by that stage that it would have been easier to watch. Poor guy wasn't given a chance to do anything but mimic robin and slash and then he's hated for that.
It's wonderful to have slash back, but DJ in himself is ok with me.
I would have liked to see Motley Crue continue and DJ replace Mick Mars when his health forbids further playing, that would have been a better match than GNR all along.
Congratulations... you'll get your wish.
Rumor has it, this Motley Crue thing retiring, is nothing more than an extended formality.
Nikki is going to take off and do Sixx:AM for awhile and ride that out. When it peaks and goes down, allegedly the plan is to either reunite Crue, or 'rename' Crue to something else, based around Nikki & Tommy up front, and new lead guitarist and lead vocalist.
My best guess is DJ Ashba (and rightfully so tbph) gets Mick's old job.
As for Vince's job... one of these smaller Crue off-shoots like Last Vegas or Million Dollar Reload gets the gig. Some have suggested the dude from Buckcherry up front.
Either way... Crue ain't done. But Vince & Mick... they're gone forever. They've played their final show with Crue.

Don't mean to sound like a dick, but he'll no that's a Bucket ripoff solo. That kind of playing is all over Buckethead's Island of Lost Minds. I remember when it leaked y'all we're asking me if I thought it was Bucket. I thought it sounded like him but would not say it was definitely him. It just sounded off.
To me that's not conclusive of anything though, the whole reason Ron was hired was because he is a similar player to Buckethead.
Just to clear things up... Bucket wrote the solo in Shackler's. He's credited as such. Can't remember the interview, but Ron was asked specifically about it in a few places, and I distinctly remember him saying he just duplicated what was already there, and his solo is what made the final studio version.
If you go back to the Rock Band mogg file leaks, Bucket's original solo was extended longer than Ron's, Axl (or Caram or whoever) clipped it, and used Ron's main guitar solo, but the outro solo (which is better) is all Bucket.
Which always made me scratch my head to baldness. If you've got a Bucket/Brain track... written by Brian & Brian... why the fuck would you even bother messing with it?
The guitar solo IS NOT in the style of Bumblefoot. Not in the least. It is ALL Bucket-style. It sounds like Bucket, but with Ron covering him. Ron said at another time, he performed it live "as true to the original" if I remember correctly.
He wasn't referring his studio take. He was talking about the one "Carroll" got credit for on the album.
When the song leaked way back pre-release of Rock Band 2, even then 99% of GN'R fans were convinced it was all Bucket. It was the diehard Bucket fans that called it being an imposter, because they felt the tone was off.
And btw Monkey, to my knowledge, sadly, none of this Bucket stuff ever leaked. But supposed, rumor has it, there was an entire complete album with Bucket guitar work and solos with Richard on rhythm done, when Robin bailed and Axl thought he was staying gone with NIN.
In other words, there's somewhere in the vault, a Bucket take on every track on Chinese, including the original Shackler's, This I Love, Madagascar (which did leak with the Rock Band moggs), and extended part on Prostitute, etc.
It still boggles my mind.
You've got Buckethead. In his fucking prime. And you let Robin & Bumblefoot shit all over the album, just so everyone is fair. I don't get it. I probably never will.

monkeychow wrote:Rex wrote:The majority of people going to these shows are casuals, not diehard GN'R fans making lists about why he turned down playing in a Gn'R reunion.
I'm making lists because of the fiction in this thread that said that DJ betrayed Axl by being involved with Sixx:Am when actually he was involved with them before, during and, after his tenure in GNR!
It's bleeding obvious that he quit GNR diplomatically when it was clear Slash was going to return, and the man himself admits he knew it was happening, but people want to deny that, and say he's lying, and deny the very history of sixx:am so we can stick to an alternate version of events that is known in 'insider' circles by a group of people who aren't even really in the band.
Whatever folks. According to this thread - DJ lied to and betrayed Axl, and he wrote all of Sixx's 3 albums and 3 Eps more than 5-6 years before they came out, he quit because he's a bastard and DJ and Slash splitting the lead guitar solos would have been a wonderful idea wholly embraced by hardcores and causals alike.
Way to exaggerate. I even said I was wrong in that he quit Sixx AM, but the truth is, he promised Axl GNR was his priority and would not tour with Sixx AM again, and blindsided the band by leaving. I have that on good authority.
And if you have that on good authority, it's almost a guaranteed lock that DJ is telling the truth.
Which is scary
Axl originally considered...
Axl
Slash
DJ
Richard
Duff
Frank
Dizzy
Chris
For 2015-16?
If that's the case, why get rid of Tommy at all? If DJ can be there, why not have Duff AND Tommy? Why the fuck not?

Please do not speak on my behalf, and then argue against that.
Oh and btw, this comment... umm... not sure how to take it.
Isn't this the ENTIRE BASIS of an internet message board?
I thought that was what the 'Reply' button was for...

And I'm glad the slimy little slash rip off, hair metal, generic motley crue , hot topic shopping, Steve Stevens fuckhead is gone.
Says the guy who "hoped and wished" that THIS band would record something.
Hmmm
Btw
Steve Stevens is a kick ass guitarist. WTF are you smokin' ?

Interesting stuff, but I don't think Hillary wins California. I think that'll be one of the shocker states. New York is also going to go to Trump imo.
You definitely have valid points, we just disagree on how these numbers are going to pan out. Pacific Northwest, and most of the Northeast are locks for Clinton imo. But I think Dem's lose Cali (close, but Trump edges), and I think New York is gonna be another close one, but with Trump easily winning. The rest I agree.
Which comes back to the swing states. They're going to be as much a necessity for Hillary as they are for Trump, where Trump will probably have an edge. Certainly the more Southern or Western they are.
Like I said, based on what you have there, I see your point. I am crazy, but I don't think Hillary gets Cali or NY. Those are going to be what buries her.

Bullshit.
You really think DJ would pass up a payday like this? Not just the payday, but all the exposure to his shitty brand? I don't think so. The guy sells a custom Dodge Challenger on his website for fucks sake.
Yes, I do think DJ would pass up this pay day, because it makes sense.
A) DJ knew he would never have a creative outlet in GN'R... ever. He figured this out eventually.
B) DJ isn't stupid. He knows he can't hold Slash's guitar strap. For the same reasons Monkey stated, DJ would've been over-shadowed by Slash. Slash could smoke him on guitar as well. It was a lose-lose situation for him. He would never get to play lead material on that music, and fans would boo him anytime he did. Why would fans pay $200 large to see DJ soloing Slash's songs, with Slash standing right beside him?
C) Just because DJ & Slash can figure this out, doesn't mean Axl can. Axl tried to incorporate 3 guitars, specifically 2 leads, for years, even though it was totally obvious it didn't work, and was largely panned both critically and by fans. Why would this time be any different? If Axl likes 3 guitars, they stay. Regardless of what Slash wants. I still wouldn't be shocked on some new GN'R songs, if Richard doesn't have some leads instead of Slash. Why did Axl drop Bucket's Shackler's solo for Ron to just duplicate it? Why did Axl let Ron rape Brian May (one of his heroes) solos? Who knows... only Axl.
and D) Again it was lose-lose for DJ, and he had to see that. He could go to Sixx:AM, and live his dream. Recording his OWN music, and being a lead guitarist in HIS band, with modest success. Or not have that, cash-in, and be single-handedly the most HATED man in a GN'R reunion, ruining his BRAND, which he's been trying to multi-market for years.
DJ saw the writing on the wall. He quit. But yet babyfaced, and kept that door cracked open, just in case for the future. Smart move. On all accounts.
Sixx:AM fans get DJ full-time
GN'R fans get their beloved Slash back
Axl & DJ get to stay friends, and save that "get out of jail free" card for a later date
DJ might've been the smartest man in the band by the time this is all said it done. People always underestimate him. I'm not talking music... but business-wise.

Axlin16 wrote:Fuck this article. Just because Axl Rose didn't suck the media's dick back in the day, and still doesn't, doesn't make him an asshole.
Sure doesn't.
He's an asshole because he beat both his wives, was arrested more than 30 times, incited several riots, converted the partners who made him successful into employees, and spent 20+ of his prime years converting the greatest band of a generation into a tribute act.
Media ain't got nothing to do with it
Yeah... a real asshole. That must be way there's still a fan base starved in St. Louis & Montreal to see GN'R live. That must be why St. Louis fans freaked and were pissed that their show got dropped off the "Not In This Lifetime" tour leg this summer. That must be why when Axl was advised by management to fire the entire band due to drug use, he did his damndest to keep Slash & Duff employed even though they threatened the very existence of GN'R and it's future with their reckless drug & alcohol abuse...
That must be why Stephanie still hit him out for money well into the mid-90's and allegedly tried to reconnect sometime in the early 2010's
That must be why Erin started going to nuGN'R shows to mark the fuck out to him, hoping to get back into the inner circle...
That must be why after 20 years... Slash still eventually signed the 1995 agreement and became Axl's employee in 2016
'Cause he's such a dick
King Dick... never doubt thy king

I think Slash leaving was a bluff Axl called him on. I don't think Slash wanted to actually leave, but it was a power play that backfired.
It backfired on the BOTH of them. By the time both realized they had sewn their seeds, that's when the resentment started to breed and beggars & hangers on interfered and started altering their history and thoughts of each other.
Both were too proud to admit they were wrong.
Slash being back in GN'R is an admittance that Axl was wrong
But Slash performing Axl's Chinese tracks is an admittance that Slash was wrong
I'm sure they are on friendly-terms now, and probably look back and just laugh and roll their eyes why it all went down the way it did in the first place, which is why certain beggars & hangers on (looking at you Matt) have been kept away.
I think Doug Goldstein stirred up 95% of this bullshit between the two.
#130 Re: Guns N' Roses » ZAKK WYLDE On AXL/DC: 'I Couldn't Think Of A Better Choice' » 479 weeks ago
Interesting to hear Zakk speak and elaborate on Axl.
So apparently, even in 2011 with BLS, Axl & Zakk hung out with each other at some point. I still wonder if Zakk was always on Axl's short-list for guitarist-replacements.
