#1501 Re: The Sunset Strip » Most Recent Movie You've Seen » 866 weeks ago

Scarface is one of the most overrated movies ever made. Axlin08, every single one of these movies and performances are weak shit compared to the Godfather movies and Michael Corleone except Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico. Pacino peaked in the mid-70's, although he has a pretty good resume even when you don't include those 4 movies.

On Dog Day Afternoon(Fredo is also in the film) he gives a great performance--this coming from someone who doesn't really like the film.  For some reason, I always end up watching the first Godfather more than the second one because I find it more accesible.  I really have to rewatch the second one since I think its been 10 years since I've last seen it.

Regarding his current output, I saw Righteous Kill whenever it came out and it was pretty weak and predictable.

Insomnia is one of the worst movies i've ever seen. Pacino gave it his all, but he was surrounded by a turd of a film, regardless of Chris Nolan.

I'll defend this a little--I think this is one of those films that got mismarketed as a cop thriller/drama when it is actually one of those movies about self discovery/ internal angst.  So going in if you were expecting a thriller and got the opposite, I can understand your frustration.

Back on topic: last movie seen--The Boat that Rocked

Also looks like Tennessee is on a downward spiral.

You're too kind.  They're already circling the drain and waiting to be flushed.  That will happen next week when they get embarrassed next week vs the Colts on SNF at home.  Yet, Baghdad Fisher still insists that Kerry Collins is fine and his starter next week.

The Bucs had 'em 13-3...

Redskins win 16-13.

GOD THEY SUCK

I haven't seen the Bucs play this year so is it a case of the offense being so bad that the defense just runs out of gas at the end(4th quarter) and just breaks or do they just suck at all three phases of the game?  At least the Dolphins won today.

The Raiders are slightly worse than the Bucs... but not by much.

Worst Teams:

1 Rams
2 Bucs
3 Titans
4 Raiders

Watch out for Chicago. That streak I predicted is in its early stage. 9 They didn't even play that well, yet racked up 48 points against Detroit. Now I know you'll say, "your grandma could score 48 against Detroit", and that may be true, but the Bears are not a high scoring team. Even against shitty teams they'll win 16-6 or something like that.

Bears can win their next 3 games(Atlanta,Cincinnati,Cleveland), and if they do, look out Minnesota and Green Bay. You don't want this team on your ass heading towards the home stretch. The other teams in this division thrive only when the Bears are bottom feeders.

Cinci is the tough game here as they seem to be back on track.  They actually seem to be playing defense this year just in time too as Lewis was on the hot seat.  Has the NFC caught up to the AFC in terms of being a loaded conference?  I'm not sure but there seems to be a lot of good contending teams in the NFC and it doesn't look like 9-7 or 8-8 will cut it for a wild card berth.  Only division(NFC) that stinks is the NFC West the others have at least 2 good teams in them.

Man, I am really starting to hate Sanchez... Or the media love for him. Jesus. I watched that game. The Jets can thank the bonehead rookie for fumbling 2 punts in the Jets 30 yard line and the fact that the Titans Wide outs forgot how to catch a pass in the 2nd half. 13 incomplete passes in a row (with 3 of those drops coming from the same receiver!) is ridiculous.

If it weren't for that The Jets would have been destroyed, especially in that second half when Sanchez played A-W-F-U-L. Though the media seems to be looking over that...

He pretty much sucked after the first quarter.  The first drive was the only one where he played well after that he benefited from the gifts from the Titan special teams.  At some point DC are going to figure out his weaknesses and exploit them.  I wouldn't be surprised if he fell back to earth quickly.

I think your blaming the receivers a bit too much.  Kerry Collins deserves some of the blame too with his happy feet for much of the afternoon.

I just read that JaBust Russell threw for 1 yard in the second half today. 1 fucking yard. LMFAO, I could do better than that.

LMAO too.  This game was on in my area and I smartly avoided it as I had seen JaBust performance in week 1 vs Chargers.  I'm still kind of surprised that they passed on Calvin Johnson since he possesed the attributes that Davis likes in a player.

So....um..........how 'bout them Lions? lol

Congratulations Russ.  Jim Schwarz is a smart and likable guy and he will get that team competitive again.

In the coming 5-10 years, there are a few teams that the league needs to deal with....

Raiders

Obvious reasons

Detroit

Either new ownership, change of city, or possible removal from the league.

Tampa, Miami, and/or Jacksonville

One state cannot handle three bottom feeders. One of these teams has to go, and you could make a case that two need to go. Miami is untouchable as it has such a storied history with the league. Tampa or Jacksonville. Flip a coin.

Detroit at least looks like it could turn it around now that they got rid of Millen.  If they didn't do anything to the Bengals with Mike Brown's reign of terror in the 1990s they won't do anything to Detroit.

It's gotta be Jacksonville as they have been having problems selling out games.  The NFL has put placing a team in LA a priority, they'll move at some point. TB just had a new stadium put up (within the last 10 years) and it might be hard to break the lease with the city.

I also thought it was strange with the odd use of jerseys today. Why were the Jets wearing uniforms that made them look like the Steelers?

I can explain this one.  I think the Jets-Titans(formerly known as the Oilers) were celebrating some AFL anniversary and both teams wore throwback jerseys.  The Jets used to be called the Titans and wore those dark blue jerseys and The Titans wore their old columbia blue Houston Oiler Jerseys.

Titans need to bench Collins in an attempt to save their season. He's always been a workhorse, but is mainly the "go to guy" when you have nobody else available. He's dragging the entire team down at this point and if Fisher doesn't have the intelligence to bench him next week, Fisher's job should be on the line.

I realize Collins had a Cinderella season last year and as Kanye would say, "I'm happy for ya", but its time to be put out to pasture and they were insane for extending his contract.

Last year was an anomaly. While Collins has had some damn good years, he was always a solid backup at best. In the mistake prone department, he makes Favre look like Joe Montana.

They have nothing to lose at this point.  The defense actually played pretty well today.  Special teams were abysmal today.  I blame that all on Fisher.  In all 3 games, Collins has had chances to either tie the game or win it in the fourth quarter.  He has failed all three times.  If you bring the blitz on him, he gets happy feet and the accuracy goes south.

They're kinda screwed by the fact that Vince Young has a big bonus due next year.  They might as well see if he has anything at QB.  I think Bud Adams could force Fisher to play Vince if they continue to suck (like he did in 2006).

Huge win for the Vikings. That last pass was reminiscent of Montana or Elway. Congrats to Favre. You don't see many plays like that anymore in this era of parity.

That was a great play.  The NFC North is a very competitive divison.  I'm looking forward to Bears-Vikings and Packers-Vikings.

The end of PIT-CIN was great too.

Thank God Da Bears won. 9 Wasn't pretty but who gives a shit. Next stop Detroit, who are flying high on their one game winning streak. 16

Cutler isn't flashy, but so far he is doing what Grossman should have done years ago. This team never needed a Montana to win. It just needs a Mcmahon.

The defense played pretty well but their depth at LB is getting thin with Hillenmeyer's injury during the game.  Also, who made the suggestion to the Seahawks to wear those blinding neon jerseys?

#1507 Re: Guns N' Roses » Now on sale for $7.99 at Best Buy » 868 weeks ago

This thread was bumped a few times, neither time with much mention of it still being their best selling album and not costing $7.99.

That might be but the BB I went still had a crapload of this cd left (I counted at least 10 racks) when I went like 10 days ago.  It wasn't at $7.99 either.

You see that as being positive?  When's the last time you went to BB to buy a CD?  When's the last time any of your friends or family went to BB to buy a CD?  Exactly.

You're right on this part.  I go to BB like once a month and never see anyone near the cd section.  It's like a ghost town there.

Safety Phillips placed on IR
By Michael Eisen, Giants.com

SEPTEMBER 22, 2009

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - Kenny Phillips played the best game of his young professional career Sunday night in Dallas. He intercepted two passes, both of which led to Giants touchdowns. He also tied for the team lead with seven tackles, boosting his two-game total to a team-high 16. It seemed Phillips, the Giants' first-round draft choice in 2008, was on his way to a stellar sophomore season.

Instead, that season has come to a shocking early conclusion.

The Giants announced today that Phillips is being placed on injured reserve with a knee condition that first surfaced in training camp. Phillips has seldom practiced in recent weeks and received constant treatment. But an examination yesterday by team doctors and an MRI revealed that the condition (patella femoral arthritis) in Phillips' left knee has worsened. A final determination has not yet been made on how to treat Phillips' condition.

"I really feel for Kenny because he had worked so hard during the offseason to prepare himself for the '09 season," general manager Jerry Reese said. "He had a great camp and was just beginning to come into his own and showed flashes of being one of the premier safeties in the NFL. We expect him to recover from this setback and come back stronger than ever. This league is about making adjustments and we will do that."

The Giants did so immediately when they were awarded Aaron Rouse off waivers from the Green Bay Packers, who released him yesterday. Rouse started the Packers' first two games of the season.

After his outstanding performance in Dallas, it would seem unfathomable that Phillips wouldn't suit up again this season. It certainly was to Phillips.

"It never crossed my mind, ever," he said. "I knew the situation. I just felt I could push it through the season. So to get this news is a real shock."

"The most important thing for us right now is to realize it's an emotional time for Kenny Phillips," said coach Tom Coughlin. "He had an excellent training camp. He played the deep ball, really, unlike anybody we've had around here. He has two interceptions with two outstanding plays the other night, he leads the team in tackles. His presence is felt in really every category on special teams and defense. He was quietly very strong back in the secondary. We were very excited about what we thought could be a Pro Bowl year for our free safety.

"Unfortunately, it's a difficult time for all of us and for Kenny. Our concerns are about Kenny from an emotional standpoint, because this morning he looked like he'd lost his best friend. He's really down. But it's something the doctors felt was needed to be corrected right now, so what's in the best interest of the player is being done. I'm sure he'll rehab and be back with us in the spring."

Phillips was the 31st overall selection in the 2008 draft, the first safety chosen by the Giants on the opening round since Shaun Williams 10 years earlier. As a rookie he played in every game with three starts and finished with 66 tackles (43 solo), seven passes defensed and an interception.

James Butler' departure as a free agent (he now plays for the St. Louis Rams) opened up a starting job for Phillips, who responded by working long hours in the offseason. He showed improvement from the first day of training camp and continued to play well when the season opened.

"That is probably the toughest part - I worked hard this offseason and I felt like this was going to be a big year not only for me, but for the Giants," Phillips said. "I started the season off pretty well with a few tackles, interceptions and for it to just get snatched away from me like this is real tough."

At some point in camp, Phillips' knee became swollen and sore. He missed two of the four preseason games, but he worked as hard at rehabilitation as he did on his conditioning and was able to play well in the Giants' victories over Washington and Dallas.

"It's hard to say exactly when (the knee first hurt)," he said. "Everybody gets nicks and bruises in training camp, so that's just what I thought it was. Swelling occurred, but most people get swelling. As long as it goes down, it's not a big deal.

"For the most part I was able to do the things that I am used to doing. I had a little bit of restriction from time to time, but that was something that I was going to play with, I learned to play with."

This is the first time in Phillips' football life he will miss extensive playing time because of injury.

"I hate to miss out on this season," he said. "We have such a great team I wish I could just be a part of it, helping them out. I know the team is going to support me. They are treating me like family, like I am their son, brothers or whatever. Jerry Reese came down and talked to me, Coach Coughlin, the training staff, everyone has been real supportive of me."

As much as he wants to play, Phillips fully supports the judgment to shut him down for the season.

"I am only in year two, so I feel this is the right decision," he said. "Longevity is the key, so this is why we are going through with it."

What won't be as easy is watching his teammates try to win their second straight NFC East title. But Phillips is determined to re-join them as soon as possible.

"We're only in Week 3, so I don't know how I am going to find a way to cope," he said. "But if anything it makes me want to work even harder. Playing two games, I had a pretty good start and I want to do better than that next year."

"The key is now everyone wants to critique our defensive team at this point in time in terms of being able to defend the run," said Coughlin. "As a team all of us - players and coaches - we all have to do our job a little bit better."

Phillips is the third Giants player to go on injured reserve. Rookie running back Andre Brown ruptured his Achilles tendon in practice on Aug. 14. Defensive tackle Jay Alford suffered a torn ACL in a preseason game in Chicago on Aug. 22.

Rouse, 6-4 and 227 pounds, had nine tackles (seven solo) in Green Bay's 31-24 loss to Cincinnati last week. He had three solo tackles in the season-opening victory over Chicago.

A third-year pro, he has played in 27 games with 11 starts. He has 113 tackles (80 solo), seven passes defensed and four interceptions, including a pick of Peyton Manning that he returned 99 yards for a touchdown last Oct. 19. It was the longest interception return in Lambeau Field history.

Rouse joined the Packers as a 2007 third-round round draft choice from Virginia Tech, the 89th overall selection. As a rookie he played in 11 games with three starts at free safety and had 33 tackles (26 solo) and a pair of interceptions. After missing the first three games with a hamstring injury, Rouse made his NFL debut at Minnesota on Sept. 30, 2007. His first start was also against the Vikings, on Nov. 11. Rouse had two special teams tackles in the NFC Championship Game against the Giants.

In 2008, Rouse played in 14 games with six starts and was third among Packers defensive backs with 68 tackles (44 solo). Aside from his touchdown, he intercepted a pass at New Orleans on Nov. 24.

In 52 games at Virginia Tech, Rouse had 24 starts and recorded 217 tackles (93 solo), 12 stops for losses, forced four fumbles and had five interceptions. A native of Norfolk, Va., Rouse was born on Jan. 8, 1984.

*The same players who missed practice yesterday sat out today's workout: defensive linemen Justin Tuck (shoulder) and Chris Canty (calf), cornerbacks Aaron Ross (hamstring) and Kevin Dockery (hamstring), wide receiver Domenik Hixon (knee), wide reciver Hakeem Nicks (foot) and running back Danny Ware (elbow).

The same three players were limited: Wide receiver Mario Manningham (shoulder), offensive lineman Adam Koets (ankle) and linebacker Clint Sintim (groin).

Sucks for them as he was becoming a solid player for them.

I would be 2-0 right now if Donnie Avery had broke his leg before the game. And the sad thing is, he's on MY team. His -1.8 lost the game for me (Tennessee's D being -1 didn't help either).

Can you swap defenses or are you stuck with the Tennessee D?  I'd monitor this one closely--their run D is good but the pass D is awful.  They play NYJ and Jax next 2 weeks and if you don't see some improvement against the pass, I'd consider dumping them.  After that they play IND, NE, JAX, SF, BUF, HOU, ARZ, IND.  There are a lot of passing teams on that list and their defense will probably get shredded in most of those games.

#1510 Re: The Garden » Things To Do In Chicago? » 869 weeks ago

I hope so too, but I doubt it. All because Jim Hendry has a hard-on for the guy. We couldn't have Adam Dunn who was practically throwing his services at us to avoid playing for the Nats. We couldn't have Raul Ibanez who's found renewed life in Philly. We couldn't have Bobby Abreu...

No we need BRADLEY. One of the worst head cases in recent memory to play pro ball.

Although Bradley hasn't spent more than one season with a single team in the past 5 seasons or so, problem is Bradley has had a sub-par season and was signed for 3 years, like $30 somethin million.

At this point, what GM in their right mind would take Bradley for 2 years, at that price, after his 2009 season?

The Cubs will either have to give him away and eat a ton of his contract (Sosa to Orioles situation), or flat out release him, and eat it. But, if it comes to down to just releasing Bradley, something tells me they'll just keep him and see how it goes. They could always "just release" him if it gets too bad.

It doesn't help that Soriano & Fukudome have both been busts.

I've always felt that Bradley needed to be in a lower stress enviroment in order to thrive.  When he gets in a big market problems usually follow-whether it be media, fans, perceived slights etc, it doesn't help that he's an asshole as well.  The only thing that Bradley has done well is have a good OBP.

As far as teams interested in Bradley--Sabean in SF is still around and Dayton Moore of KC just got an extension despite putting together a 100 loss team.

They really should have just signed Abreu for 4 million or whatever he ended up with.

The Cubs are lucky that they play in a division with a bunch of rebuilding teams-Reds, Pirates, Astros.  That leaves the Brewers and Cardinals as main competition.  If they need pitching help though, they should not go into the FA pool this year--it is a subpar year for starting pitchers.  I'm not sure they have enough prospects to get into the inevitable Halladay sweepstakes.
