I wish we could get more info on TIL. I'd like to know exactly how much of this song was changed once the CD era got underway and how close was it to completion before Slash bailed. We know a version of it existed back then, once again in 98, then it flies under the radar until 2008 when we hear about Patti coming in to work on it.

Indeed.

I was wondering last night if the Slash version was the original, and the version we got was Robin's take on the existing solo - much like how the solo by Bumblefoot in Catcher is clearly based around the melody from the Brain May (axl edited) version or like how fink would put his own spin on stuff like the NR solo.

It was a thought for the conspiracy theorists anyway!

I think the fact they're going forward with Frank, Richard and Melissa, and playing CD material is a really good omen about this being a band with a future and not a nostalgia tour you'd get with Matt, Gilby, Izzy or Steven.

Pitman sure didn't see it that way 16 16 16 16

Anyways I agree the focus should be moving forward rather than just nostalgic based shows. But for me those ideas don't have to me mutually exclusive. If we can move forward with Slash as the guitarist then we could move forward with Matt as the drummer.

To be honest to me if they're moving forward it becomes more important. The backing players in a live setting doesn't matter so much. Studio versions we will have for the rest of our lives. Based on UYI and VR I have more confidence in Matt to deliver great drums for the songs in the studio than I do Frank who is a bit of an unknown quantity when it comes to composing drum beats for the songs. I know he re-did the drums on 3 songs or whatever...but we don't know how he'd go from scratch...whereas even the less interesting VR stuff like libertad all had great drumming.

But hey...things are going pretty well at the moment so i'll live with it.

I see where you are going...let me be clear aside from hardcores I don't think the general public gives to much of a shit about either of them.

That said, I think Matt has the stronger brand recognition. As well as his GNR background, Matt got some recognition from Velvet Revolver. Gilby to my knowledge has never been involved in another large scale project other than Supernova which wasn't well received.  Not trying to piss on Gilby, I'm just saying I think Matt  is a notch above him on the fame ladder these days.

Additionally my personal viewpoint is that Richard is replacing Gilby more successfully than Frank is replacing Matt. Sorry to keep shitting on frank - it's not personal - but I do notice it - put it like this - if you air guitar along to the rhythm part you will nail it - but if you air drum along to the drumming you'll find bits missing.

That said I doubt anyone cares but like 4 or 5 forum nerds like me.

That really does make you think about the media. I assumed the Irish struggles had been resolved long ago because I've literally heard nothing about it in our media for the better part of a decade.

Unfortunately Slash doesn't seem to know how to play Nightrain anymore.

I think it's just he's played it so much recently he's begun having fun messing around. Check out some of his solo boots - he was playing it note perfect a while back - now he's improvising more.

That actually came up as an idea. It's ridiculously expensive, but if I can find a way to swing it, I'm in.

Excellent.

I was devastated I couldn't come to the usa for this round. But we're going to make up for it locally - Metalalex and I have a fine tradition of meeting up in one of our cities come tour time it's been going on since the VR shows. I'm looking forward to meeting Gibbo in person too.

Anyways...come to our prison island...hmm that sales pitch needs some work but you know.....

My current thinking:

TIL: This is the solo it always should have had - the way it builds - classic era stuff.

CD: Slash's tone and his outro solo have also improved this track

Better: Slash's outro is better playing, but I must admit I'm so used to the first couple of notes of the old solo that it's taking a while to get used to. I sort of want a hybrid here, first few phrases of robins then into slashs hahah. As for the intro - at first I was worried it was a bit "tacked on" even though it sounds cool as fuck - but now I think it sits well with the bridge part - Better has always been a strange frankenstein of a song in terms of it's styles.

But to me it's all about This I Love at the moment. That solo is amazing. I pray for a studio version. Preferably recorded now once slash has mastered it live rather than earlier - as you know how Slash improves his solos on the road normally.

Interesting.

The question is will they want him back in if it means giving him an equal share?

The problem for Izzy is that these days the money is made from live shows. These shows sell out with or without Izzy. His real value would be in development of new records but most of the classic acts have altered their models to only do that a couple of times a decade if that.

I'll confess I thought it was going to be a new track....it sort of sounds like it should be!

Axl seems quite keen on honouring everyone's contributions,

He does but then he's also been very open over the years to experimenting with tracks after they were originally finished.

Consider:

- The Lies version of "you're crazy"

- The alternative version of Don't Cry

- Changing the way KOHD is played

- The "Big Daddy" Sweet Child of Mine

- The rest of the re-recorded AFD

- The use of bumblefoot to redo solos to "Catcher" "Shackler's Revenge" and "Riad"

- Alternative versions of Better made with DJ and Bumble well after the albums release.

- The planned Brain remix of CD

So I feel that while Axl does tend to acknowledge the original creators, there's definitely a precedent that would suggest he can be open to further creative tinkering.

I feel it could be done in a way that's respectful to the old versions - like drop it as an EP or as a bonus disc with some other greatest hits - rather than a complete re-release of CD and delete the old versions. That way both could exist in the catalogue.
