Dizzy has the 2nd longest tenure in the band and has just as much right to be up there as Slash himself.
In particular for his work on that little known album AFD.....

I think the truth of it is somewhere in the middle.
Usually professional musicians are recruited through connections. However usually those recommendations are only made if the person has adequate talent. You don't get a job from word of mouth as a muso if you sucked at your last booking.
Bumble is a good example: He got the job cos Joe Satriani gave him the nod. Why did Joe do that? Cos Bumble is a freak talent and Joe knew it. Why did anyone care what Joe thought? Because Joe is a freak talent.
So a connection alone doesn't mean you have no talent.
That said - I can also see Smoking's point - that despite whatever recommendations - some players made the cut for the exceptional sound. They wanted matt because he was a heavy hitter. They wanted Slash because he has that unique sound. They wanted Bucket because he's a monster player.
So there is also an extent where if you are not a unique player then anyone of a certain level of ability who had the right connection would get the nod.
I think this is true of Frank, it's probably also true of richard even though he's def a fantastic player, and I actually think it's probably true of Adler too....Adler is great...but had Slash been highschool mates with another adaquate drummer it would have been that guy.
It comes down to replicability. You can replace Adler easier than you can replace Slash. You can replace pitman easier than you can replace Axl. It doesn't mean the replacement players aren't pro musicians with great skills. But some people are on another level.

Screws have to be tightened...kinks ironed out...
That's exactly the point though.
VR's early shows didn't feature any ironing. From the preview gig onwards you hear the way matt locks with duff and you go "oh fuck yeah...that's that GNR sound". Likewise there wasn't really a "settle in" period when matt joined for the UYI tour.
Hell they actually formed VR after playing at a charity gig and going "oh shit something still happens when we get together. There's something about it"
They have a natural and amazing chemistry.
Frank is a pro so I'm sure he'll get in the pocket with Duff and Slash and it will get good....but the fact that there's kinks to be ironed makes it less than the natural magic the older line up had.

Regarding Batman's fighting - to me it relates to the major themes and the ending:

I've listened to Frank play with GNR for YEARS. And you do realize Slash and Steven would not have gotten into GNR without their relationship with Duff, right?
And then it just so happened that Slash became the player of his generation on his chosen instrument.
Not expecting that to happen with Frank....you?

DJ Ashba of drummers might be the silliest thing in this thread. He's not a place holder for anyone.
I stand by it.
It's not as bad because He doesn't have the image issues of DJ.
But musically DJ was adequate for the roll rather than inspirational. He did a nice solid job of mimicking what the people before him did - the people who were the authors and innovators of that sound.Aside from his dress sense - there was no reason to hate him either though - he was was just there - holding the spot - making it so you could see the band.
That's exactly what Frank is too. He does a pretty good job of getting some Adler swing in the AFD songs, and he hits hard enough like Matt that the UYI tracks don't sound neutered, and sure enough, turns out he can play all Brain's drums too. There's kinda nothing wrong with his drumming, no reason to hate him....he's just there...enabling you to see GNR. However he doesn't have that magic that the others had.
The AFD drums are magic cos of Adler's style, UYI drums were magic cos of Matt's chemistry with Slash and Duff.
Frank is simply adequate, but he's not unique. You could replace him with Slash's drummer or most other competent drummers and the show could roll on the same. He's a place holder.
#1828 Re: Guns N' Roses » Secret show: April 1, L.A.? » 528 weeks ago
I respect Frank for the time he injured his foot in Melbourne but finished the gig anyway.
That said he does not have anywhere near the chemistry with Slash and Duff that Matt has.I'm not saying he's a bad drummer, he's surely not, and he does a reasonable compromise job of mixing the style of Adler/Sorum/Brain and a little bit of his own.
But that's also the problem, he's the DJ ashba of drummers: He's there to place hold for the guys who really made the GNR drum sound.
That's why it no longer suits - we're back to the authors of the sound not those who mimicked.
#1829 Re: Guns N' Roses » AXL In ACDC??? » 528 weeks ago
My guess it that he was asked to audition and accepted because he loves the band.
But I'm not sure that will end up with him actually joining the band.
There would be a lot to work out.

I don't mind LALD as it's really a UYI era cover even though it never left and really sort of brings back classic GNR style and era to me.....
but The Seeker is the least interesting of all the covers they've ever done to me.
It's not that it's bad, it's just not really interesting and it's been done too much for it's entertainment value, and there's so many better options that would be interesting to hear in Axl's voice.
