There was a supposedly commissioned Catcher music video that was basically stock footage of someone’s kid in LA.
There was a unreleased Sorry music video but didn’t feature the band.
never heard about those. was that all rumor and innuendo? any links to more info?

The only song from the Chinese era that Axl ever seemed to show a special interest in was "Better".
I think he knew that would sell the album and was really proud of it.
It's interesting that despite being tightlipped about CD II, he's sprinkled in multiple mentions of "Soul Monster".
yeah, better was clearly the of the favorite of the album. correct me if i'm wrong, but better was the only song that we ever heard anything about in terms of a music video. we eventually saw the "final" product (axl would call it a demo, i'm sure), but it was an absolute disaster. totally amateur. there's fanmade vids on youtube for chinese democracy songs that absolute crush that nonsense.
it's crazy that a creative visionary like axl didn't have a whole plan for that video. especially with all the storytelling in that song. the best they could come up with is some live footage, backstage shots and introducing the 18 people who have been in the band? the only thing interesting in that whole debacle was the lil red devil guy.
was axl ever asked about music videos during any of the chats?

i think the instrumental version of the song is what made is really grow on me (also true for shackler's).
i never realized how badass the main riff is. i also really like the little guitar slide during the chorus for some reason.
i'd love to hear the current band jam on an instrumental of this. that would be killer. just keep ax away from the mic!

DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing" seems to have influenced Better, Madagascar, and Prostitute with the hip-hop groove and heavy sampling.

you know, the hip-hop style drum beats are actually some of my favorite parts of the entire album. it's crazy, especially when you go back and listen to the drumming on any of the other gnr records. it's a completely different style, but it works wonders on those songs. hell, i even love the drums in the intro of irs.

Axl wrote:I think it's our most Black Sabbath moment. Sang it on a Christmas eve. Imo the meanest section of anything I've sung to date. Which having said that I'm sure when it's heard others may disagree but we felt it was a Christmas card of unadulterated venom so to speak. I felt a lot better afterward. (Axl Rose , Here Today... Gone to Hell Forum, Dec. 2008)
we need to hear this fucking song. chrismas card of unadulterated venom? axl sure has a way of hyping his shit up. he should have been a wrestling promoter. could have given mcmahon a run for his money!

There was also some Beatles reference if I remember a Bumble interview correctly
the story is that axl and bumblefoot were eating hamburgers and jamming on rhiad. axl turned to bumblefoot and told him a part of the song reminded him of "hey bulldog" by the beatles. i played each song back to back one time with my girlfriend.... we had no fuckin' idea what ax was talking about.
i have to say, though -- i never liked rhiad until very recently. the live performances of the song were just so goddamn awful with axl's helium vocals. the studio version is a damn monster, though. the chorus is powerful as fuck. can't believe i'm saying this, but it's grown to be one of the highlights of the album for me.

the album should have kicked off the same way the song did at first the house of blues show in 2001.

not sure why, but i don't think the intro was ever played with a tone like that ever again. it was so raw, dirty and grungy here... every show after, it lost a bit of its punch.

badass instrumental with some of axl's all-time wackiest vocals. the intro is hilariously awkward and out of place. the verses sound like each line was sung during a different year, in a different studio with a different axl. his pitch is shifting all over the place and i'm pretty sure the vocals are heavily auto-tuned. that may have been the effect axl was going for... but i don't really buy that. seems like axl just went in and half-assed the vocals to get the song on the album, so that he could save the "big guns" for the 2nd and 3rd parts of the trilogy.

=It was like looking at a U.F.O. that everyone else ignored.
that is an amazing way to put it!
even if the actual release was underwhelming to me, i am now a proud owner of the vinyl. it's one of my most treasured records in my collection, just because of how invested i was in the whole thing. sometimes, i pour a heavy crown royal, take the record out and just hold it like a newborn baby. the inside artwork is absolutely amazing, by the way. it's a shame that on my version, "madagascar" skips so much to the point of it being unlistenable.
was chinese democracy ever released on cassette?

just to correct you a little bit, IRS demo had indeed leaked in april 2005, but was of low quality and spread across the interwebz broken into pieces, with some pieces having a bit different quality than the others, hard to say why.
when all this happened, it was probably the most excited i ever was for chinese democracy. when the clip dropped with the axl scream going into the bucket solo, i must have listened to that a thousand times. after hearing that, i was confident axl was going to release an absolute monster of an album and take the world back over.
the better leak a while after was pretty goddamn exciting, too.
by the time the album actually came out, i was way past giving a shit about any of it.
