#11 Guns N' Roses » Name each GN'R member's defining moment on Chinese Democracy » 866 weeks ago

What I'm asking is this - what ONE moment on Chinese Democracy is *the* stand-out contribution from or best representation of what *each* musician brings to the record in terms of playing or performance?
Rather than listing my own favorite moments for every member, I'll start with a two that I keep coming back to as some of the album's highlights:
Robin - solo on "Better"
Axl - vocals on "If the World"
#12 Guns N' Roses » Brain & Frank - a question about the album credits » 866 weeks ago

I apologize if this has been addressed elsewhere: does anyone know how exactly it works when Brain & Frank both have drumming credits on the same song? There are several examples in the album to choose from, and it has me curious.
In "Better," for example, did Brain write the parts and Frank recorded them? Did they both record? If so, how exactly did that play out in the album version?
Again, just curious and would appreciate everyone's perspective.

The whole thing is kind of bittersweet, isn't it? More than anything, I wanted this album to be relased, and to FINALLY hear new recorded music from my favorite band of all-time. In that sense, the entire thing has been very worth it, as I think the album is spectacular and I will enjoy it for years to come.
That said, I also feel a sense of loyalty to the band, and - as a long-time fan - want others to acknowledge how great it is - or at least give it a listen - for it to be successful both critically and in terms of sales, and to defend the work and effort that went in to getting it out.
They're definitely two separate issues as far as I'm concerned, and I need to remind myself how happy I truly am to have the album to enjoy. In the end, no matter what happens in terms of sales and acclaim, that has to be enough, doesn't it?

As I've said elsewhere, having the the "we're going after Dr. Pepper" story be the first real communication from the GNR camp after the album's release does not bode well.
If Axl/GNR aren't going to do any press to support the album, then they shouldn't do any press to back-pedal or make excuses, either. I hope that isn't what happens.

What I think is even sadder is that many - myself included - bought Velvet Revolver records because they were the closest thing we had to GNR, or that we might ever get again. It's just been so long since we've heard from Axl himself, that many simply may not care anymore, regardless of who is playing alongside him. I hope that's not the case. Again, when I was in Best Buy, it was clear just how excited some of the people buying the record were, and it *is* a great record.

GUNS N' ROSES' new album, "Chinese Democracy", has registered the following first-week chart positions so far (Note: The album wasn't available a full week in most of these territories when the charts were compiled):
Finland: #1
Ireland: #3
Netherlands: #4
Sweden: #4
Early U.S. sales reports suggest that "Chinese Democracy", which was released through an exclusive deal with the Best Buy chain, might not be the blockbuster the industry had hoped for, according to The New York Times. Sales figures will not be available until next week, but early estimates put the first-week total at 300,000 copies (including a reported 25,000 downloads at iTunes on November 23 not counted towards the opening week for the Sunday release) — roughly 50,000 more than the opening number registered by "Contraband", the 2004 debut from VELVET REVOLVER, which features in its ranks Rose's former GUNS N' ROSES bandmates Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. KANYE WEST's new album, "808s and Heartbreak", will be No. 1 on next week's Billboard chart with a total that looks to be between 450,000 and 500,000.
#17 Re: Guns N' Roses » Friends asking for RIP of your CD album! » 867 weeks ago
I'm not burning a CD for anyone, but sharing the music with them in one form or another in person, in hopes that they'll buy a copy on their own. And I bought (2) copies to give to friends. What confuses me is how many people I've seen or heard say that they're buying a cd copy and a digital/iTunes copy for their ipod. I'm all for supporting the band, but I'm not sure why anyone would buy an iTunes copy instead of ripping their cd copy into iTunes....

Bragging rights?
#19 Re: Guns N' Roses » Fans... » 867 weeks ago
I'm not sure I agree. I saw a tremendous amount of enthusiasm at Best Buy today from fans of Axl and the current lineup, as well as those who haven't heard a single GNR song since the Illusion albums. As you say, time will tell.
Me, I'm optimistic. The more pressing questions I have concern fan expectations from here on out (who is in the band? Will new fans be sad to realize no Bucket, no Robin, etc.? What comes next? How long will it be before we hear from the band again?).
As far as Axl, I'm not sure I can use the word "apathetic" when the man has put 17 years into getting this album out. I'm not sure I'd want to do much press at this moment either, but rather let the music stand on it's own. Enough distractions, you know?

I had a really fun buying experience. I went to a Best Buy in NW PA and picked up my (2) pre-ordered copies. I had them in my hands and was ready to leave in seconds, but saw the big table full of Democracy CDs and the huge stack of vinyl copies, as well as the standing display. What's more, is I saw so many people walking around with both versions, fans in T-shirts, etc., and I had to take a closer look (not bad for a Sunday at 9:50 am). I held the vinyl in my hands, and knew I wanted to take one with me. Others saw me pick it up and started talking. One fan was hoping he had the money to buy the vinyl, too, while another guy told me about how his wife made GNR cufflinks for him and his groomsmen for their wedding. It was amazing to see how much Guns means to fans, and how important today is for so many.
A good day indeed!
