#221 Re: The Sunset Strip » GNREvo's Favourite Album of the Century so far, FINAL ROUND » 286 weeks ago
btw I did consider doing a Top 10 of the 90's and then 80's (imagine Thriller going out early *yikes*). However, there just wasn't enough interest in this series, it took a month to get enough nominees for this 1, and then we had albums going out with just 6 votes. So there's not much point, unless forum activity picks up anytime soon (don't count on it).
Thank you to all who participated in this one.
I think we did that years ago but lets toy with the idea & see where it goes. Even just reading others without nominating could be insightful & cause debate.
My 90s:
Nirvana - Nevermind (Excluding from order because its the most impactful, but not the best)
U2 - Achtung Baby
Metallica - Black Album
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Pearl Jam - Alive
GnR - UYI 1/2
Dr Dre - The Chronic (1993ish album?)
The Black Crowes - Shake Your Moneymaker
Alice In Chains - Dirt
Third Eye Blind - red album
80s:
GnR - AFD
Def Leppard - Pyromania
Michael Jackson - Thriller
U2 - The Joshua Tree
Bruce Springsteen - Born In the USA
Madonna - Like A Virgin
Motley Crue - Dr Feelgood
Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever
Prince - Purple Rain
Phil Collins - No Jacket Required
The 80s gets a little tough cause I didn't have or necessarily live thru or get fully into them all. Some like Bruce, Madonna & Phil Collins I know were big so picked the album more or less during the height of their popularity, maybe isn't their best album to the diehards. Also probably shoulda included Run DMC or Public Enemy in there. A decent list tho. Somewhat in order.

You graduated one year before me if you were a senior in 1990. I didn't get into Home Alone until I had kids of my own.
I am kind of a Christmas freak. I love the holiday season. I have tons of traditions and movies and music I listen to.
As a metal fan, I of course love Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Hard to believe it's basically the band Savatage with more traditional/Broadway singers and the whole country has eaten it up for 20+ years. Their tour is canceled so they are doing a $30 livestream this year. Tickets are usually $75 to $200, so I jumped at this. It'll be a pro-shot Blu-Ray production, basically, which for $30 is about right on.
There are a lot of movies I generally watch this time of year. Home Alone I and II, Elf, A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, Scrooged and A Nightmare Before Christmas being the perennial musts. There are others, like Office Christmas Party or The Night Before that are "adult" and less cheesy. I really like the war movie Joyeux Noel, about the Christmas Eve truce during WWI that brought opposing soldiers together to celebrate.
I was 91. Didn't it come out Christmas of 90?
I had high hopes for Office Christmas Party (Jennifer Anniston, right?) but saw it last year finally and was disappointed in it, felt it could have been better or more realistic. The Office (British version) was short lived but has a phenomenal Christmas/final episode. Kinda have to watch the 20 or so other episodes to get how it ends. National Lampoons probably my fave, & A Christmas Story of course. Planes Trains & Automobiles in an underrated Thanksgivng holday treat.
Wild about Trans Siberia Orchestra.. Did you ever hear of Roddy Chong, violinist? I saw him motivational speak a few years ago, he was great.

Anyone have any fave holiday movies? Traditions?
Reason I ask mostly is I saw Home Alone promoted for Disney+ as the 30th anniversary of it (incredibly hard to believe), and, I was never a huge fan of this one, it is really good. Layered, with alot to it, and Macauley Culkin was a perfect fit. Watched it last night. seen it before but maybe never gave it a chance.
I may be a bit older than some of you. I was 17/senior in high school, and hated the hype & success of it, just didn't buy in. Which, now I look back, and wonder why I hated it, and also man, it woulda been a perfect movie to ask a girl out on a date on. Stupid me probably would rather drink beer & smoke cigarettes in a woods somewhere in the cold.

I actually agree with IDs post. Hispanics are usually just how he described. At least the many that I have known and grew up with plus the few who work for me. Who the 3 were actually Trump supporters. Those are the numbers, Trump did do better with voters of color than he did previously. I dont see what the big hoopla is about. The right gain votes that were typically the left.
Amd no, I did not vote for Trump, nor am I a Republican. Im an independent.
My problem is that he amplified a tick in one direction and minimized a tick in the other direction. It's like the white, college vote doesn't matter BUT look at this minor tick in the Republican direction for Trump in the state of Texas...TEXAS?!
Talk about cherry picking stats.
I agree there was probably a little bit of that going on. Also, he lost Arizona, which is one of 4(?) states on the border/wall. In fact, he did pretty badly across all 4 'Wall' states.

We are really looking at the reality of democrats losing the Hispanic community. What's ironic is that they were who Dems were going to use to seize control of the presidency and both houses by turning Texas blue, the way they turned California blue: illegal immigration. But the generational shift completely blew up in their faces.
Hispanic Americans are largely conservative-religious, patriotic, capitalist, and against illegal immigration. Another twist? Not only did Trump attract more black men, but also Muslims, which Dems lost. Once the second-third generations became more Americanized, distancing away from their parents and grandparents experience, immigration became less important and individual freedom and American idealism became more important. They embraced what affluent, college educated, and overwhelmingly white liberals took for granted: being American.
The only gains dems made are college educated whites.
I found this a good post. GOP kinda found a niche in an anti-uber liberal & free everything folks, as well as latino vote in some areas. I think you're black men & Muslims probably needs clarification. More than what, than he got in 2016? Low is low, an increase from 3.5 to 4.2 or something is negligible.
Anyway that aside, yeah the Dems possibly overreached again. Remember in 2016 John Kasich said on the debate stage 'You know, we're up here running for President and talking about what bathrooms people can use" and if you remember, thats the country we were back then. And immigration, I think 2 races now have proven completely open borders and cozying up to illegals isn't gaining new votes. On the flip side tho trump 'lost in a landslide' that he claimed Hillary lost in, so his build a wall and lock them up in cages likely wasn't a winner either.
With Pelosi on her way out soon, or at least likely soon time to give up SOTH, they need a new identity. Hope they realize AOC isn't it. She wins NYC & the NY/National media, but there's about 40 or so other states who aren't lock step in her thinking.

^^ I think they were all thrown out. One was thrown out for heresay, the judge said something like 'Saying a friend of mine said they saw someone' is exactly heresay.
The cause was meritless and trumped only by the stupid.

Regardless of his current tantrum, I don't see anyway Trump gets the nomination in 24. The GOP will most likely flip the house in 22 and keep the Senate. If they run Niki Haley or some other bonafide conservative, there is a good chance they win the white house in 24. With Trump, they can lose it all.
I don't think he runs, but can the GOP stop him or exclude him if they did? Wouldn't he just trounce on Nikki Haley & all others like he did in the 2016 primary?
Again, I can agree the GOP would want to and likely be better off moving on from him, but do they have anything to control him not running?

He fuckin nailed the AC/DC show I went to.
Friend of mines a big ACDC fan. Had tix to the show. He was on the fence about the whole Axl/DC thing, but ended up going. Sent me a text the next day, saying it was a great show, and Axl delivered. I didn't expect it but yeah he said he was solid.

Doesn't bode well for Biden's agenda. No medicare for all.
She's gotta be less divisive. A dem in WV or whereever can't be the extremist liberal one in NYC is. It takes coming together & a bit being a moderate. I heard tho she probably wants the Speaker Of The House role in the future, so she's likely trying to take charge with things like this. A bit much if you ask me, ditch the Twitter shit as well.

PaSnow wrote:I read where this Newsmax TV hasn't been reporting the election results & is only focusing on it being undetermined as to who won, and reporting on trumps lawsuits. Really doubling down on stupid. Anyway, while trump TV seemed plausible, I'm not sure he really has the time, interest, or assets to fully start something like that from the ground up. I think he felt Fox News wasn't lock step with him enough at the end of the campaign and he's holding a grudge, and words out he might goto this Newsmax if they offer him enough $$. Sounds crazy, but a channel like that would likely go into debt to pull some of the ratings he'd bring, also be a Howard Stern/Sirius type deal where he shares heavily in the profits (ad sales) and get a minority ownership interest.
They've already tried Trump TV at the beginning of his presidency, so no doubt they'll try to go back to that. I've heard he's going to start a Super Pac and, of course, a potential 2024 run.
I think its mostly a moneymaking scheme. I think PAC's are independent and not subject to fimance laws.
