It's garbage now...and you're right...a sterile corporate hellhole although in its defense... fits perfectly in today's world.
I just shake my head because I have nephews who are born in the 2000s and they will never know the cultural impact (or maybe they don't care) of the cinema. A lot of the older theaters were in these building that were around since the 1930s (or insert decade here) and had been through a lot of events. I just remember going into one of those theaters and just feeling a small connection to history. There's just something special about just going into one of those older theaters. I can't fully explain this in words. But you always mention our culture getting dumbed down or lost etc...and this is one of them.
Oh, theaters used to have a little video game area where you could either hang out with friends or just kill time. Those are pretty much gone now in favor of more diverse food options (overpriced food).
This isn't only on theaters too. I went to a retailer (cough...Target) to kill some time and beat the heat today. Holy shit, I was depressed at what they turned that store into. It was clean, clinical, depressing and pretty empty. It made me think back and miss the Woolworth's near the complex where I used to live in the 80s. It was close by and sometimes my grandma would just browse.
It's funny yet sad how Hollywood will spoon feed us a bunch of nonsense, go political with cries of racism aimed at anything remotely on the right...yet lighten the skin tone of black actors on movie posters in China because they're not very fond of black people.
LOL, not very fond of black people. You're being super nice there. It's worse than you think. At least amongst the older generation Chinese. I don't know if it's prevalent amongst the younger generation. But man some of the racist stuff I've heard (personal experience here) is like...let me put it this way, if a White (or any other race had said this stuff) there'd be an outrage. Certain races "smell". I've heard blacks athletes referred to as like horses/animals. It's Hollywood hypocrisy at it's worst. Rail on something that may or may not be racist while getting into bed with a nation that is full of racists. Again, it's probably not all/majority of the population but I would bet a lot of them have that attitude/those thoughts.
Agree with Executive Decision. There's a good 100 minute film there. The last twenty mins or so are not neccesary.
What they should have done with Speed 2 is went with a train or a plane. The luxury liner was a dumb idea. Oh, I just read that Keanu got blackballed from 20th Century Fox for around 10 years because he refused to do Speed 2. Fuck that shit, he was right not to do it.
Yeah, the problem with what Hollywood is doing with minorities (and women) is that it's obvious and uneccesary. I'm all for them making films that show off their experience/different viewpoints of the world. I'm fine with something like Bound which shows two lesbian women trying to steal money from a mobster in a traditionally male oriented (noir) genre. Or Dead Presidents that specially dealt with post Vietnam malaise amongst blacks. Those are at least interesting and new ideas.
What I don't like them making a new Ghostbusters that featured minorities and women just because they didn't feature them enough the first time. It's not like they are making a totally new film. It's just rehashed shit with women/minorities in the lead instead of men.

Those are some great fucking ads. Brings me back to where I'd grab the paper and see the ads (w/the poster in black and white like some of these). You want to know something? The irony is that with the advent of the reclining seats, the cinema experience is actually quite comfortable. But it's quite sterile and the ambiance is gone. I'd rather go to some theater with shitty/subpar seating with a wide choice of films.
The problem with those films exclusively on streamers is that the quality sucks. It's one step up on direct to dvd stuff. Try looking at some of those Netflix exclusive movies and the summaries. Some of the movies sound really cookie cutter and alike. Hate to sound like an old fart, but we'll never see those days of creativity from mainstream Hollywood anymore. The China stuff is also kinda unbelievable... in that they are selling out to an awful communist regieme that has increasingly become intolerant. It's all about money/bottom line now and nothing else.
Oh, Chopping Mall was a fun film I saw a few years ago. They probably could have done more with mall aspect but it was fine for what it was and I enjoyed it.

I also have no idea how there hasn't been a backlash to the complete oversaturation of superhero crap.
The propoganda machine helps I think. Disney Plus, Hulu..whatever streaming service is connected to these films. Free advertising for the 21st century.
I don't really want to go off on this topic but fuck the "mid tier" film has been totally eliminated in the last 5-10 years or so. You had your blockbusters/franchises, then you have another types/sets of film, that may or may not star an A lister, but it was different from the franchise/blockbusters in that is was creative/had a hook. Then you had the indie stuff and the direct to DVD stuff. This was like from 70s to maybe the 2000s. The Matrix probably qualifies as one of these types of films.
Now? Franchise (superhero shit usually), then indie stuff, then DTV stuff from fading icons looking to make a buck for whatever reason. Dramatic drop off in quality.
These actresses wanted the role...
Winona Ryder
Madonna
Demi Moore
Juliette Lewis
Robin WrightJulia Roberts turned it down twice before the role finally went to Fonda. It's actually a miracle she even got it with that level of interest from others. I'm shocked it wasn't handed to Madonna or Demi Moore on a silver platter.
Honestly, I think they got lucky here. I can't see Roberts, Madonna, Wright, or Lewis in the role. Roberts wasn't playing a heel killer coming off Pretty Woman and stuff like the Pelican Brief. Madonna never had the acting chops. Wright, maybe? But maybe she doesn't do Forrest Gump as a result of this. I think she made out ok in that trade off. I could see Moore pulling off the role. Skeptical about Winona, as much as I like her and also she was also very skinny as well. She went to do an "oscar bait" film w/Scorcese in 1993, probably not a loss for her in missing out on that film.
Rewatched Heat. What a wonderful and beautiful film. I can't really say enough about it. There's actually a bunch of plotlines in this and they all work. And the wolf analogy that is mentioned in the film is accurate. The 3 main characters are all wolves (including the Val Kilmer character). And wolves hunt alone or are drawn to others like them, which is why the coffee shop is so revered. Those 2 share a kinship, understanding, and intimacy in that they can reveal their true thoughts about their lives/philosophies to each other. Mann's films are often about the outsider/criminal trying to fit into society and into a normal lifestyle (this is very prevalent in Thief as well) and it just doesn't happen and the two don't mix. There's always a major conflict there. They are meant to be alone and lonely. Vincent (Pacino character) realizes this and accepts this, which is why his marriage is on the skids. Neil deludes himself into thinking he has a future w/Eady (after she finds out he's a thief/criminal) and that's kinda his downfall. She was basically done with him after that plus he went against the Heat "creed".
Oh one fucking hilarious part I never realized. After Vincent finds his wife cheating with some jobber at his house, he goes balistic and steals the TV...then dumps it later on in the street. Pacino had a nuanced performance here. He's channeling some of his "scarface" over the top stuff along with the character. You can see some of the pompousness here, but it's never overwhelming. But he balances it out with some character moments like offering sympathy to one of the victims of Waingro/ and or his relationship with his stepdaugher.

I loved Party of Five but they were both crazy for not leaving the series in season 3...maybe 4. They both had horror movie hits, the media loved them, guys loved them, and it was time to break out.
Instead they ran that momentum into the ground. Hewitt stayed on Party of Five to the point they knocked her off the show to do a spin off series which bombed of course.
She wound up being lucky to have the career she did have.
Timing is everything.
There were some crazy stories about her back then(mainly sex related). Imagine if phones and social media had been around then.
Of the two, Hewitt probably fucked up more. She had more helium than Campbell, whom I could see getting pigeonholed into the smart girl/girl next door/supporting character role in movies.
But Hewitt? From 1997-1999. There was buzz and she should have gotten into more movies as you say. But there are no real female movie stars that can open a movie on their name only (maybe Roberts and Bullock). It's almost the same with the males. Guys like Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt (he's had more bombs than Cruise) are a dying breed. You ever look at the top grossing movies for the last two years? All franchises. And you basically could have tossed anyone into the lead role and it wouldn't matter. The franchise (or brand name) is all that needs to be there.
Pale Blood--1990 low budget Vampire film. Not bad; slightly arty. Had this cute actress who was in Project X. There's a twist here that works here. Also a good look at LA in the late 80s still.
Point Blank: Lee Marvin revenge flick. I think I prefer Payback (Mel Gibson 90s film). Both films come from the same source material. But I think the Gibson film is "truer" to the novel. Point Blank isn't bad at all. It's just a little psychadelic and trippy and slightly confusing. Paybeck is funnier as well.

even if her career doesn't hit the skids, she was like Geena Davis where the window is small due to her age at the time.
This is where I really hate Hollywood's double standards. Guys can go into the same leading man roles into their 50s. Women? Once you get close to 40, they are going to be writing grandmother (ie shittier) roles for you.
Put her in an Aerosmith video in the middle of that and she's Alicia Silverstone.
Silverstone is a great example of someone who broke through and got the "rocket push" and did nothing with it. Or maybe she never had the box office power . If we are using wrestling terms, she was a mid carder and not main event material. Looks at some of those bombs she starred in post-Clueless.
Neve Campbell and Love Hewiitt probably had a better box office track record/success than Silverstone. I love Silverstone but it's obvious that she was best suited for jailbait and snobby girl roles.
Miller's Crossing; I should like this but it was ok and really dragged in the second half to the point where I started falling asleep. There's nothing wrong with it but I just don't connect with it
Vengeance; revenge thriller w/Johnny Halladay. Not bad. Liked a lot more this viewing. It had a nice meditative, "western" feel to it.

What’s the point of police if they don’t protect? What’s the point of police if they prevent others from protecting?
Love that so many on here are verbally jerking off to this…comparing it to die hard…talking about how the guy was getting a haircut….
It’s entertainment to these sick fucks.
I only learned of this a few days ago but technically speaking the police aren't obligated to protect. There are several court cases that support this point.

Amanda Peet was hot here and makes me wonder why she didn't become a bigger star.
Yeah... should've happened. I first saw her back then on an episode of Law and Order.
There's a lot of low-mid level actresses from that period that deserved better careers. It had to be frustrating for many of them. Looks like your career is entering the stratosphere...here comes a different batch of actresses moving up while you run in place or fade into obscurity.
Excluding those who sleep their way to the top, I've never understood exactly how Hollywood picks and chooses who moved up and down the totem pole.
I don't remember her name as it's been awhile since watching it, there's an actress on a late 80s episode of Matlock that was smoking hot. There's probably an alternate universe where she got Julia Roberts career instead of being a name I can't remember.
I've never really gotten how Hollywood chooses either. It's easier to explain how they move actresses down: age, box office success and attitude. Let's face it if you have a rep for being difficult and you're starring in a few bombs, it's far easier to blacklist you.
To this day, I'm not sure what the appeal of Julia Roberts is. I mean she's not that good looking and her acting isn't that great.

Just got to the formation of DX on the Monday night wars vlog on youtube. That was a really monumental show and the birth of the attitude era. Totally changed wrestling. Totally forgot how they brought up Hall and Nash and insinuated they were secrely aligned to take over wrestling, and not so subtly trashed Hogan.
I was listening to a Scott Hall interview he did a few years ago. Apparently, they came really close to being fired, like around the time DX started or just afterwards. Basically Hall and Nash were really pissed and went to find Bischoff I think (had something to do with Hogan I think/or money issues). Anyway they go to his office and find it and trash it a little, Nash was really close to starting a fight there that would have most likely gotten them both fired and free to join DX.
Hall and Nash joining DX and Bret Hart being the "Greater Power" are two of my favorite what if storylines in wrestling.

And I wouldn't be surprised from the quality that none of it was done in an actual studio.
I listened to Old Skool for the first time in months and the cut and paste aspect of it was obvious, even to my untrained ear. But it is what it is. If this is the only way to get new music from these guys, then so be it.

Ray Liotta doubleheader:
Unforgettable. This one is ok but too long for my tastes. Also I was hoping for more of the science aspect; instead they focused on the killer/crime angle. I rarely say this but this one could use a modern remake, and focus more on the memory aspect of the film. I thought Fiorentino's role was sort of basic (not her fault, they didn't give her as much to do).
Identity. Saw this one years ago. It's probably a film that I would only watch once. The ending doesn't make that much sense to me. Amanda Peet was hot here and makes me wonder why she didn't become a bigger star.
