YET, Robin is referred to as a respected part of GN'R's "history", and Slash is not.
Why is it so?
An interesting question.
I think it basicly comes down to fans wanting to feel closer connected to Axl by adopting his position on things.
Now its fine for some fans to like or dislike slash on a musical level and want or not want him in the band. Its natural for an opinion to vary in that way.
But there is basicly NO reason for a FANS to hate him on a personal level - unless you have met them in real life. So why do some people? I think its a few things:
1. Jarmo once said to me that fans of the new band grew to hate fans of slash because of a lack of respect of the new band shown by fans of the old. I can see the logic, but it fails to account for people like me who enjoy both bands in different ways. Also - this starts a tit for tat reactionary thing where both groups insult each other and the truth is always lost in such a battle.
2. I think some people like the new band, and feel a need to make things a "team loyality" game and so feel that to demonstrate their like of robin they have to hate slash. to me this is simple minded - its possible to value both players for the different things they bring to a band. For my part I REALLY like Chinese Democracy. To me its a killer album. But to my brain that has nothing to do with slash or old gnr. I also love Slash's work with alice cooper, and snakepit1 and in GNR. To me the album is good enough to be accepted on its own - and insulting slash and so on is a shame cos im my mind - its actually creating a distraction to how good the music is.
3. It's clear axl has issues with slash still. and I think a lot of people just follow his lead....either to feel closer to him as a fan, or in the hope of demonstrating a loyality that may be rewarded in the cases of site admins and so on.
It's a shame. I look at Axl and I see an intelligent man. I like to think he could understand that a person like me can love the way Slash plays his guitar on snakepit, and also love what new guns has done on Chinese Democracy. Just as I can understand that Axl spent a lot of time in real life with Slash and thinks he is a cunt or whatever. That's between Slash and Axl to my mind. So myself I attribute that level of intelligence to Axl - I hope he can accept that as a music fan its possible to like the output of both parties, and see them as distinct and seperate things from what any of the musicans are like on a personal level (which I wouldn't know anyway - the only person close to GNR i met was Baz and that was only for a few mins - cool guy though). But it seems many assume Axl/Slash wont do this - and think that in order to like one you must hate the other - and therefore talk accordingly.

If Axl spends another lifetime putting out an album, he'll immediately doom this 'fresh start' to be another epic lameness event,
That could happen but there are also reasons it may not. Perhaps this group of people will connect better with Axl. The old band (esp Slash and Izz) would have been unhappy about taking orders from Axl when they helped to build the band (understandable and I think Izzy has said as much even).
The 2002 band had some people with unusual personalities. Bucket is a great player but he does seem to be VERY excentric. I've also read that Robin was never too comftorable having him in the band, and his multiple departures to NIN, and modification of slash's parts, suggest he was never too comftorable in the role he was given IMO.
This new band - its got RON and Ashba - two people who are known to be easy to work with and not ego centric. They've joined GNR in full knowlegge that there are multiple players (unlike fink) and free from ego of feeling its your own baby (unlike the original players) and also with a knowledge of the possible 'risks' of working with Axl...(they've seen the delays, riots etc).
I'm not blaming the old members at all for what's happened, i'm just saying Axl is who he is and that won't change, but it doesnt mean that a group of people can't come along who are better able to cope with who he is to get results out faster than before. Or not. Time will tell I guess.
Also...some of the legal dramas and relationship issues that no doubt stole some focus from Axl have ended now. There will always be some drama with GNR, but when Axl is happy he does seem to get some things done. Eg the 2006 tour. If the new band makes him happy - an album doesnt have to take as long as CD did.
#8053 Re: The Sunset Strip » Jason Lives: FRIDAY THE 13TH » 895 weeks ago
So i Finally saw this today.
I'm mixed on it.
It's interesting how its a partial reboot but also clearly a sequal. As has been said earlier in the thread. It's a little confused in that regard.
. Overall for a modernisation I thought it was pretty good in that they kept the elements of jason's character that we're accustomed to - like they didn't give him any really bizzare new traits (contrast with say the psycho remake
and I also enjoyed that they sort of kept some of the traditional Friday elements
even if some of those elements were handled in a some what unbelivable way. I agree with james concern about plotholes in the script...
So there were some wasted opturnities and some things that could have been done better. That said...I definately enjoyed the film - and as a casual fan of the other films - i've seen them all - but only once or twice each - I found it enjoyable and while not without its issues - I didn't think it was particularly sub-par compared to a lot of the other entries in the franchise. I'd call this watchable and acceptable...just with a few annoying mistakes and not as cool as it could have been. But it also could have been fucked up a lot worse IMO.

^Oh yea Doug has game and anyone who says otherwise hasn't seen him play live upclose like I have!! He would have been a good choice too as he can shred yet also has killer blues skills. But I think he was happy with whitesnake.

Today is a new day, the 1998-2008 era and it's rotating roster of musicians is over. Let 2009, be a fresh start for GN'R.
I both agree and disagree.
On one hand I think as fans, we need to accept that Axl does things his own way, and that's something that isn't going to change. He commented online that he doesn't work for the fans. For me, I can accept he does things in an unconventional way, his music to me makes up for any disappointments I have in between. But that's not the case for everyone. What I am saying though is, anyone expecting Axl to change his nature, and GNR to operate according to their own views about how a mainstream commercial band should function is setting themselves up for a fall.
However that said, I too consider this the beginning of the post CD line up, and see that as a very good thing. I liked the Bucket+Fink guitar attack we had on CD, just as I liked the Slash+Izzy attacks from the original line up. But those days are over, and what the band needs to do is have a line up that can move forward, while being able to play both the CD era and older material faithfully. I feel that Bumble+DJ Ashba has the potential to replicate the studio albums faithfully, and are creative enough to insipire Axl to record some new music (at his own pace). So I can see this as possitive for a 3rd age for GNR.
So, the world won't change because of a new line up, but as fans, if you enjoy what Axl does and are prepared to let him do it his way, then there's every reason to be hopeful now that this new incarnation of GNR will give us a positive future for the band.
#8056 Re: Guns N' Roses » DJ Ashba First Impressions » 895 weeks ago
I'm really pumped about this.
While it should be musical not image...he's got the rock look and tatts, and will fit in with Axl's new image, fortus and bumble well to present a co-hesive GNR.
Musically he seems to be a creative type, he was a co-writer and producer on Motley's last album which I enjoyed....and from what I've seen on you tube his chops are nice and emotional sounding and more than adaquate to play the robin parts.
I'm expecting some kickass shows with him, bumble and Axl.
Long term I'd love it if he, Axl and Bumble put down some new song ideas and we got some more music to enjoy, it'd be nice to see the new band function more normally now that CD is finally out - they could go forward with a new line up etc....i mean obviously things will always take time in GNR land...but there is potential for good stuff here,
however for now...i'll be happy to check out some live gigs...he seems like a good fit and a good choice. Obviously my overall impression will depend on hearing him play with GNR....but right now I'm pretty happy with the call.
Assuming he plays robin's stuff as per the record, and also handle's slash's old parts faithfully (without too many rearrangments) I could see more of the fan base accepting the line up too. I think robin was a unique and tallented player in his own way - but its obvious to me his changes to the lead parts really made the absence of slash harder to stomach for many old fans. While its true there are a number of people who will only want slash - i think if the old songs were replicated in a manner more consistant with their recordings the hatred would soften. That's why people like Richard - cos when he plays NR - while it isn't slash playing - the tune goes the way you expect - but when someone like robin plays it you feel its not the same song. Anyway - i'm getting off topic...but I feel that he is a good choice, and if he plays the parts accurately, there's potential for this GNR to be really really powerful in my opinion.

Frankly I see this as really good news. They gap in the line up is filled - tours can happen - DJ and Bumble are creative as fuck guys - maybe we get some new projects at some stage too.
He's a good pic from what i've seen of him.

I'd never heard of this guy...but here is some footage...sounds like he can be emotional
I think its good news, i liked that last motley album, and its great that a tour is happening!
#8059 Re: Guns N' Roses » 'Chinese Democracy' Officially Drops out of the Billboard Top 200 » 895 weeks ago
I think we need to distinguish between cool and marketable. Perhaps the school kids had begun to mock GNR because it was born in the 80s...and perhaps the media was having a good time pimping the grunge revolution....but didn't this come up in refrence to GNR as a brand adding value to sales? I mean in 93 I saw GNR at a concert with like 75,000 people...thats bums in seats. Fads come and go...but the history alone makes GNR a marketable band.
#8060 Re: Guns N' Roses » 'Chinese Democracy' Officially Drops out of the Billboard Top 200 » 895 weeks ago
I'm not too worried about the charts, I like the album anyway if others do well thats cool, if not, well, their loss.
You know what i'd love. Remember on the "The Slip" from NIN how they had that live rehersal bonus dvd...I'd love some thing intimate like that with GNR...just get Axl, Bumble and whoever for a new lineup - shoot a couple of songs intimately with pro footage shot live - would be awesome.
