This is going to sound objectionable to most folks on here probablty..but
Personally I love Motley Crue, and I think ashba did some good stuff with them behind the scenes on the Saints Of LA album.
I've tried to get into Sixx:Am but it's too kinda modern or something for me. I like the occasional song but it's almost like it's not motley enough for my taste hahaha.
I'll admit DJ isn't in the same league of guitar player than Buckethead or Bumblegoot. But in fairness - that's an elite level of playing - you're looking at guys like Vai and Satriani and that kinda type of player at that level - virtuoso guitarists rather than rockers as such.
I thought musically DJ did an honourable effort at trying to replicate what Slash did. Guitarwise slash is the player of his generation, and his guitar sound is fundemental to the first 5 GNR records - DJ seemed to respect and appreciate that - and although he isn't as good as Slash - he seemed to be trying to honour the music which I respect.
The part I didn't like about DJ was his stage outfits. His look would be well suited to the crue (which I love, but it's not GNR) and it didn't fit will with GNR to me - and I didn't like how he seemed to be sort of move for move trying to impersonate slash. Musically it's good to replicate Slash's parts faithfully - but like trying to move like him and be him on stage crossed the line from tribute to slightly awkward to my taste.
That said - when Metalalex and I were at GNR back in the DJ era - he gave us some of his drinks on stage and he was a totally fun and cool guy to watch. So like I don't have too much to say about him that's bad at all. He isn't slash but that's not his fault - and he got a bit over the top with the tribute perhaps - but I respect that he's a fan too and he was trying.
I also believe based on how he wrote with Motley that he would have made something good with Axl if Axl was up for it.
Personally I'm not the biggest fan of Robin. I think he had a place with GNR - as I like some of his contributions and I get that he's an artist or whatever - but I think that place would have been as Rhythm guy. That way he could write stuff and add the occasional small solo but be relieved from Slash-solo duties on the back catalogue.
It just didn't work with him on lead on those songs - either his chops were not up to it or maybe he was intentionally altering them to put his stamp on it - but to me that would be like Myles Keneddy adding in a new verse to Civil War to put a stamp on it. Like play shit how it goes or don't play it.
So I don't hate the guy I can see a version of the band working with him in, but he shouldn't have been on that AFD stuff. So for that reason I tend to prefer DJ to robin.

Really my only issue is how many better shows there are to release.
Like - Rock Am Ring 2006 blows this show away - although I guess they wanted the current line up - but even then something like Tokyo 2009 was a much stronger vocal performance than this dvd. I even think the london 2012 stuff is probably stronger from memory.
It's just a bit frustrating to me. Like I wanted a DVD that showcased the incredible ability GNR had at that time.
I know when i watch this disc I tend not to get though the whole thing but swap to another show as there's just so many other Nu GNR shows that were better - and that's only based on what we have available - I can only dream of what must be in the vault if they proshoot most things.
#813 Re: Guns N' Roses » Differences between bands ... lack of professionalism and other issues » 432 weeks ago
The question that remains, is ... why Pearl Jam is getting more intense, more professional, dedicated to the fans, and the GNR is not?
I don't want this to seem negative as I love GNR, but when I think of the band I often think of that disney pirate quote "Take All You Can and Give Nothing Back".
I think GNR are the priates of the music world. They were basically street dudes who made good.
They've always had that sort of attitude - In Slash's book he told of crashing vans for fun to see how many times Geffen would replace them, we know that the band used label negotiations as a way to dine out large for months with no intention of signing to any of them.
You see it over and over again in the history of the band - from their interactions with others to the disputes between each other.
I'm not saying they're not artists because they are - Axl is a top-list all time front man and songwriter, Slash is the guitarist of his generation.
But at the same time they've always had a "fuck the world before it fucks you" mindset.
I wouldn't call it entitlement exactly (ironically that's what they accuse the fans of) but the GNR journey has always been about what they can get out of the deal. They like to make people happy as well I guess - but I think it's a secondary consideration.
The performances of Slash would not say that it still has brilliance or charisma.
Respectfully disagree there.
Axl was strong and great in 2016, but for much of 2017 he wasn't vocally at his best.
I think Slash saved these shows and gave them the credibility they had.
I'm quite fond of bumble and the other guys - but it was really Slash back that made this the big reunion event it was - I like Duff - but Duff with Ashba and Axl singing as he did in 2017 would have just been a modest year like say 2013 or 2012 was.
Let's talk about the reasons our favorite band swim, swim ... and die on the beach.
For me I think the problems are:
1. Diagnosed or Not, and ok it's his personal business, but it's obvious from the public symptoms and testimony of others, Axl has not always been in the best mental health. He had to take control of the band so as not to be fired for it - but history has shown the pressure of that has taken its toll over the years.
2. A lot of people in the music business are criminals - unfortunately this interacts with Axl's situation so that he gets less trustful, more paranoid, and then acts in ways that self-harm in order to punish people who tried to screw him.
3. The pirate mentality I mentioned above. Maybe it's rock and roll mentality I dunno. But they will feed the fans only after they eat first, and they're pretty hungry. A good example of this is no reunion album. They didn't need to do one to sell out. So they didn't. Other bands would do it for the desire to do it alone...but GNR is about what they can take...and it wasn't needed.
I hate to sound that cynical cos I do love the band and the music, but as they say "it is what it is" and that's how it seems to be - after being a fan for something like 28 years now.

Although the length of sessions in a day might end up longer than 3 hours.
I remember with the Black Album the recording schedule fucked up James' voice pretty bad.
I guess my issue is Axl's voice is the unknown. Like as a person who likes both old GNR and Chinese I have no doubt Axl can write a song I will enjoy. As a person who likes all the Slash side project I have no doubt that Slash can play amazing riffs and solos.
So to me that the songs will be cool and that slash will shred are givens for the situation - the thing that seems more risky is which voice will Axl choose to use on the record, and what shape is it in at the moment. That seems the most likely thing to change to me.

My issue with the concert is that vocally it's not one of Axl's best nights.
Like most of the 2009 and 2010 shows (which had the same line up and many of which were proshot) he was amazing.
So why release that one?
#816 Re: Guns N' Roses » Blind item on crazydaysandnights.net » 432 weeks ago
I sort of hope they do use vintage Axl vocals.
The vocals of CD are huge - like the TWAT and IRS screams.
Then the leak of the redone TIL had amazing raspy vocals.
I'd take those voices over the voice he had going on in the 2017 GNR shows. IT was noticeable how the voice changed between 2016 and 2017 legs.
#817 Re: Dust N' Bones & Cyborg Slunks » Adler: Drug Stories & Playing with GNR » 432 weeks ago
The fact he did very little afterwards is pretty telling. Granted, the music scene changed & his style especially was uniquely simplistic, but all he seemed to accomplish afterwards was encounter a monstrous drug habit AFAIK.
Yeah but I see this as a bit of a chicken-egg thing.
Like you take a guy who is hooked on drugs, then take away from him an achievement most could only dream of and would be nearly impossible to replicate, so he falls further into a slump and takes decades to quit the habit. Then the fact that he stayed in a slump is used to justify talking his life away from him. But would it have gone that way if things were different?
I feel the same about Y2k. They use it as a joke now how we all prepared for it and then nothing happened, but did nothing happen because of the preparations?
#818 Re: Guns N' Roses » Blind item on crazydaysandnights.net » 432 weeks ago
They could, quite possibly, just say "hey, I got thirty songs, let's re-record them with a rawer sound."
I'd believe this.
There's 100 song ideas in the vault - so it's not inconceivable they get the top 20 or 30 that work in the old band style - then add in a couple of new riffs from soundcheck...and work it up into a 12 song album that melody wise is CD2 inspired but guitar and arrangement wise has a more classic GNR feel.
They will want to capture the current chemistry but it also doesn't make sense to discard 90% of your working life's work either.

Mystery solved?

That's concerning. Does it fit the clues about divorces and recent touring? I'm not familiar with pumpkins history in recent times.
#820 Re: Guns N' Roses » 2017 rock rio » 432 weeks ago
RIR 2017 was held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. On September 16, 16, 17 and Nov 21, 22 and 23.
Of the rio shows - GNR headlined the show on September 23rd.
GNR played a stand alone NITL show in Las Vegas on Nov 17th.
Is it possible you are confusing those? Or have I misunderstood what you're saying.
