It looks fine for horror film, but I guess there won't be any of the original's dark humour. Shame, I was still holding out for Evil Dead 4 a few years ago with Ash in future.

Watched the trailer a few days ago. Looked pretty legit and had some sweet effects. I haven't watched the films either; but I have seen bits and parts when they were on TV. Bruce stated that this is a re-imagining and not a cheap cash in that will disrespect the original fan base and new comers to horror films with humor.

Russ, I'm way overdue on thanking you for this link- it probably would have been some time before I stumbled on it myself.

I'm a HUGE Evil Dead/Raimi/Campbell fan (and horror in general), and I think this thing looks great. It's got all the backers, it looks gory as all fuck without being torture porn. As far as camp goes, well, the first one was the lightest on camp so it will be interesting to see if they try to play it straight or not.

What really intrigues me is the idea of this being successful enough to have sequels. What direction might THAT take?  If this one plays it fairly straight, it could easily branch off in sequels as a straight horror franchise. OR, they could go the obvious route and remake the next two movies. My fear is that camp-horror and ED's success was at least partly due to time and place and HUGELY due to the Raimis and Campbell's hammy awesomeness. Could someone else pull that off well? I don't know.

And a third direction would be the prequel route- which could be played straight, campy, or a sweet mix of both.

No matter what, I'm psyched for this film, and hoping it's kicked off by some local theaters putting the originals up on the big screen.

By the way you two up there- if horror and awesome are at all your bag, and you're not so young that anything that came out before 1999 already looks dated to you, GO SEE THE ORIGINALS ALREADY! big_smile

Honestly?

It looks better than the original. I was never a diehard fan of the Evil Dead. Although the tree rape scene was a big mind fuck for me as a kid. Especially when she started liking it for a second. It scarred me for life.

I liked Evil Dead II better, and I thought it was a whole different beast by the time Army of Darkness came around, which was also good.

But I thought ED fans overrated the films. They were good, but this was not some sort of legendary trilogy. It made the Carpenter-produced Halloween trilogy look like fucking Star Wars by comparison.

I just found myself bored by Evil Dead mostly. The gore factor was intense though, and it's a sleepy little film you can get away with watching at 2am and be entertained. I just didn't it as more than that.

I think the sequels embracing the camp factor more is why I liked them more. By II & III it was FULL camp. You didn't even take it seriously anymore. It was all about the camp. And I liked that I could trust it on that level.

I didn't like how ED I switched back and forth. It also felt like it dragged in places.

So this film taking a darker turn seems rather interesting. It's such a popular and viable brand-name, i'm shocked it took this long to be produced. I knew after Robert Englund (an icon) got re-cast as Freddy in NOES-2010, all bets were off. There would be no Bruce Campbell-led Evil Dead IV. Even though Bruce could EASILY still be Ash again and do a camp-licious ED pic.

I'd still rather have that, but this is fine too. As long as it doesn't get too teeny bop.

Looked like crap to me.

Slickly shot contemporary mainstream 'horror', painstakingly reproducing some aspects of the original, to beat of a 'cool' soundtrack, with additional graphical bits to appease the 'Hostel' crowds.

Why should anyone bother?

For the record, I like director Fede Alvarez's recent work.
