Remember that show in Donington, the one mired by issues including sound and thrown bottles? Between songs, Axl was backstage, all fumes. "The most important show" was going wrong.

The show did end with a high note, with a storming finale after the issues were cleared. But Axl was far from placated. In his autobiography, Baz recalls the chopper ride back.

On the post-gig helicopter ride back to London, Bach noticed a “despondent” Rose “fidgeting nervously” with the helicopter’s door handle. Fearing the worst, he kept his eyes on Rose – who also had refused to put on his seat belt – for the entire trip, worried that the GNR frontman was going to bail out.

Wonder if Ax deletes Baz's number after reading that one. Still, it goes to show a decade ago, Axl was still high on anxiety.

This was a great show. It's a shame we only got those 2 pro-shot videos of it.

The crowd was antagonistic from the tip and the band won them over.

Was this the show Axl yelled at Merck to book him some studio time / get a plane ticket to New York?

I can take Axl's side on this kinda thing. There's a lot of pressure to deliver and people would hold him accountable if the show goes bad even if it is some wider issue that wasn't directly on him.

The fidgeting probably had to do more with the "Splenda" he had earlier that night.

Well, it was also being filmed/broadcast. This was basically the "relaunching the band to the wider public" show. Worst possible time to be wrestling with technical issues.

It's a hell of a rock n' roll way to go out if nothing else.

This....in the end...is what he has succumbed to and the reason why he has wasted the last 20 years.

In 1987, he had nothing to lose...In 1997, he appeared to have everything to lose. Timid and hiding in the corner, lashing out. And he has never been able to escape that. He created a situation where he had to stand on his own. Insisted on using the name Guns N' Roses as though it were an LLC that hired out contractors and tried to live up to something that took contributions from so many different places.

Axl Rose by himself cannot do Guns N' Roses. Nor could any other member on his own. There is not comparison between the Use Your Illusions Axl swagger and the fairly timid man front man he has become. Terrified of taking risks.

What happened to this guy?

The guy that was like...the follow up WTTJ and SCOM needs to be...this bold step seen here. Sadly, it took him taking control of the band to make songs like this happen. If only Axl could have given up control like this to Slash or any other member of the writing team after Axl has his turn. Something...anything to assuage the situation. Diplomacy was never his strong suit back then...or maybe ever.

Let someone else carry the weight...and relieve some anxiety.

Agreed.

But I think it's always been Axl's curse:

His emotional state and the problems he was experiencing during the UYI era was so extreme that he needed to be in control as the only way to protect himself. I mean lets face it - the industry is full of goons that would have fucked him over and lost no sleep if a chance arose, and his own problems were causing such drama that the rest of the band may well have fired him for his antics if he'd been an equal partner not taken charge.

So what's a guy to do? Assuming he was doing his best already to control emotional outbursts, then the only safe way to protect his position was to take control. So he did.

But the price of that is incredible pressure and unfair treatment when anything goes wrong.

So it's kinda his AFD cross to bear..because of his problems .he needed to be in charge, but ironically those problems would be made worse by the stress of being in charge...

Why should have Axl ceded control of the band he fomed ? does n`t make any sense. You don`t relinquish something you created no matter what.

Guns` never would have amounted to anything with Slash at the helm. Great guitarist but pretty one dimensional who rarely leaves his comfort zone. He`s not a leader material.

That's not how it happened though.

They were equal partners for AFD and most of UYI era.

Then as part of the label renegotiations axl had the others sign a document saying he owned the name.

Then he started a new legal entity with the same name (as he has the rights to) and asked the others to rejoin as employees.

So in terms of control he leveraged his way from one of a group to the one who calls the shots.

Like i say - he had to do it or risk getting fired, but it's also been what's changed since UYI and why no projects have gone smoothly since.

The pressure of leadership doesn't seem to suit his other issues.
