I like the lyrics a lot. I think those parts Neemo mentioned (except for Maddy and TWAT) are fantastic, and I think the whole of Chinese Democracy and Riyadh are underrated. The metaphors are pretty cool, if Riyadh seems like an underdeveloped song in the lyrical department.

The worst lyrics from newGNR are Silkworms and Song 2, imo.

How are song#2 lyrics bad? They are some of Axls best on the new songs

Not to sound insulting but when I read things like that I wonder how you could be a fan of the band... to me it's so obvious that those lyrics are lame that I can't even give examples. It's all cheese, like a rehash of the worst of IRS The Blues and TWAT.

Seems like forever and a day - ugh. That right there already makes me feel embarrased to have clicked 'play'. It's so exposed and whiny, and such a tired cliche phrase... I just can't like it.

Using cliches in the lyrics, and writing really cheesy lyrics really doesn't seem heartfelt at all.  That song is definently one of the worst out of the demos we have.

I have always loved:

The Blues

What i thought was beautiful
Don't live inside of you anymore

Madagascar

Forgive them that teared down my sould
Bless them that they might grow old
Oh and free them so that they may know
That it's never too late

The outro to Better

All of Chinese Democracy and Rhiad, even though Rhiad could use a little work i think.

Those along with the IRS one that Neemo posted

I love those lines.

Song #2 and Catcher don't really do anything for me lyrically...though i know alot of people are really into both of them...its not that they are terrible or anything but its not my thing...i gotta agree with CC that they are bordering on Cheese

yeah i forgot those 2 lines...they're actually the ones that made me think of doing this thread 5

but anyway like i said before there are really no super terrible lyrics even with the cheese in there...even silkworms is better than some of the worse UYI and AFD lyrics IMO if you compare it to back off bitch or something, "pussy full of maggots you know that's what you are" is actually more creative than "down in a gutter lyin' in a ditch" 16 ...though i wonder if its more the wait that has ironed out all the worst stuff moreso than Axl actually evolving lyrically

The lyrics of Chinese Democracy are probably Axl's high point as a songwriter. Seven years later and people still don't get it really shows how its pure genius.

However, my favorite is from The Blues.....

"All the love in the world couldn't save you..."

Don't hardly listen to The Blues anymore though, and it used to be in heavy rotation since they first played it.

Re: Highlights (and Lowlights) of the Lyrics on the CD era material

I.R.S.

Through all the rumors I can tell,
Some things didn't work so well

There's not anymore that I can do

Better

If I were you
I'd manage to abhore the invitation
Of promised love that can't keep up,
With your adoration
Just use your head and in the end,
You'll find your inspiration
To choose your steps and won't regret,
This kind of aggravation

There Was a Time

Social class and registers,
Cocaine in the hall
All the way from California,
On the way to your next call

Madagascar

Forgive them they tear down my soul
And bless them that they might grow old
And free them so that they may know
That it's never, too late

For the many times, what seemed like, a memory
I searched and found the ways you used to lure me in
Oh, I found the ways
Why it had to be,
Mired in denial and so afraid

Chinese Democracy

Sitting in a Chinese stew
To view my disinfatuation

The Blues

And though as long as this road seems
I know it's called the street of dreams
But thats not stardust on my feet
It leaves a taste that's bittersweet
That's called the blues

What I thought was beautiful, is only memories

Riyadh and the Bedouins

Oh, sweet salvation
Like all my frustration

I've always loved Axls use of metaphors in his writing.  I have to say, I am not disappointed in any of lyrics I've heard so far.
