Re: BP's top kill effort fails to plug Gulf oil leak

ROBERT, La. (AP) '” BP admitted defeat Saturday in its attempt to plug the Gulf of Mexico oil leak by pumping mud into a busted well, but said it's preparing yet another method to fight the spill after a series of failures.

BP PLC Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said the company determined the "top kill" method had failed after after it spent three days pumping heavy drilling mud into the crippled well 5,000 feet underwater.

"This scares everybody, the fact that we can't make this well stop flowing, the fact that we haven't succeeded so far," Suttles said. "Many of the things we're trying have been done on the surface before, but have never been tried at 5,000 feet."

It was the latest setback for the company casting about for ways to stop the crude from further fouling waters, wildlife and marshland. A 100-ton box placed over the leak failed after ice-like crystals clogged it, while a mile-long tube that sucked more than 900,000 gallons of oil from the gusher was removed to make way for the top kill.

uttles said BP is already preparing for the next attempt to stop the leak. Under the plan, BP would use robot submarines to cut off the damaged riser from which the oil is leaking, and then try to cap it with a containment valve. Officials say the cutting and capping effort would take at least four days.

"We're confident the job will work but obviously we can't guarantee success," Suttles said of the new plan.

The oil spill began after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in April, killing 11 people. It's the worst spill in U.S. history '” exceeding even the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989 off the Alaska coast '” dumping between 18 million and 40 million gallons into the Gulf, according to government estimates.

Word that the top-kill had failed hit hard in the fishing community of Venice, La., near where oil first made landfall in large quanities almost two weeks ago.

"Everybody's starting to realize this summer's lost. And our whole lifestyle might be lost," said Michael Ballay, the 59-year-old manager of the Cypress Cove Marina.

Because Mr. Hope and Change is presiding over the disaster.

If Reagan, Bush, or even Clinton had handled it like this, there would already be impeachment proceedings underway.

Since it's Obama, the fish are swimming in peaches and cream, not oil.

If he continues twiddling his thumbs, I hope a foreign country intervenes and resolves the crisis. Its the biggest man made disaster in world history and is going to effect other regions of the globe as well. Someone has to step into the breech, and its not gonna be us.

This could potentially be a "doomsday event" if it continues and we have a dipshit up there making remarks about his daughter saying, "Daddy, did you plug the hole yet?"

The sooner this clown exits stage left from the world stage, the better.

2012 cant get here quick enough.

Not true. Look up the Ixtoc incident of 1979. It went on for months and spilled around 3.5 million barrels into the Gulf. It happened off the coast of Mexico and affected 100+ miles of the Texas coast. The Mexican government used sovereign immunity to avoid paying punitive damages to Texas residents affected by it. The BP spill is probably around 750,000 barrels at this point. Depending on how long it goes on, it might end up in the same neighborhood as Ixtoc.

Why? So Obama can get re-elected? The dude ain't going anywhere until 2016. Live with it.

I gotta admit, I understand Obama hesistancy to play the political game of not interfereing with business could cost him even more people to cry socialism... but in a case like this, Obama needs to forget his public image. His obsession with his public image has caused this situation to get worse. He doesn't need to be worried about if people will think he's more of a socialist interfering with business, he needs to be worried about handling the situation at hand.

If a bunch of stupid Americans, which is 95% of the country vote Republican in 2012 because of your "socialist" policies, fuck the stupid bastards. They're as good as who they elect in their democracy. Right now Obama needs to be in there both guns blazin', it doesn't matter the political fall out.

Where are all the environmental groups? Why are green-peace doing nothing? I haven't seen one environmentalist on TV since this thing started ! Are they being censored or have they given up all hope of being able to effect a huge BP ?

Do you guys really think the government is any more capable of fixing this? I don't understand this idea that it could be solved if Obama just "intervened", whatever the hell that would imply. We're dealing with a problem that nobody has the answer to, so I find it hard to throw stones at Obama over it.

I gotta admit the Obama staff really dropped the ball & got in late in the game on this. 40 days afterwards & it still going on yet NOW we hear it's a crisis?! It was a crisis right away & should have been treated as such & BP reprimanded right away. All politicians were talking about 40 days ago was the Arizona Immigration reform..  OH nooooo, immigration. It's been around for decades, it can take a back burner for a while.

I agree Stephven. Not that he's the hero, but where's Al Gore been?  Has anyone seen him around much or interviewed. I know he's not in office but didn't he make it his "life" and "career" to help the environment?  Can't he roll his sleeves up & get involved down there. Organize a team together to work on a solution. Myb he has been, I don't have cable TV anymore so I haven't watched the cable news nets much.

CC it's all bullshit anyway. The EPA were sitting on there asses anyway. How do these oil pipes not have shut off valves?!  That would have been the first think I would have mandated. A disaster scenario. Geeez, now terrorists know an easy new way to attack us, just missile our offshore oil rigs.

It's all so hopeless it sucks. They're saying they might just wait till August now. Fucking August?!! Reminds me of a Goo Goo Dolls line, "Sleeping on the White House lawn ain't never changed a thing.. Look at all the washed out hippie dreams" -Flat Top

This.

What can the government do?

Nuke it?

What if that just creates an oil-spewing crater?
