Yeah great movie. Swan song of the Cohen brothers I think. Haven't made anything nearly as good since then.

A Simple Plan - I love this... probably Paxton's best film. Great cast and story.

I noticed something now that I didn't back in the day.

On the surface, all 3 guys fuck up the plan, especially the two losers.

In reality, Bridget Fonda is the one who ruins everything. Paxton tells her immediately, and she starts telling him what to do each step of the way until everything unravels.

Also been watching a bunch of the 1980s Alfred Hitchcock Presents. A great show. It has a bunch of stars and soon to be stars in it.

Jerry Maguire - Hadn't watched this since it was released on VHS.

It's pretty good... although didn't deserve its hype.

Still can't stand Renee Zellweger.

Leave the World Behind - I really got into this but that's one crappy ending.

Carlitos Way - Finally got around to watching this. Not bad.... Penelope Ann Miller brings it down a notch. Penn outshines everyone here. They don't do a good job with the 1970s setting...it feels like the 1990s.

Scarface - Double feature with Carlitos Way...both on Tubi. While I've watched it over the years and definitely not one of my favorite Pacino movies, it's worth a watch just for the score and cinematography. It's that awkward unique period between 70s and 80s where it wants to be the gritty 70s but the 80s is seeping into it.

I need to watch even more movies from this period.

Do You Know Me? - An independent meets Lifetime movie. It kept me interested but the plot gets a tad too ridiculous and that second act drags on way too long. Weird seeing Jeremy London in anything besides Party of Five.

All Quiet on the Western Front - Netflix remake. Amazing. The best is the beginning when the group of teenage friends are all excited for joining the military, romanticizing war, etc and then the sudden realization that war is not what they imagined. This happened to countless millions in those days.

Missing - Both Spacek and Lemmon deserved Oscars...also deserved Best Picture.

Most of these are found within 1980-85.  After that I'd say the 80s seeps in and it can be gritty but that 80s cheesiness is a damn drawback, Black Rain which was released in 89 is a good example.

Anyway, stuff like Ms. 45, and Cutter's Way are classified as 80s films but they belong in the 70s. 52 pick up (released in 1986) is really sleazy and I don't suffers as much as other film released in the second half of the 80s.

Watched some new movies....

The Iron Claw - Garbage. This is a 100% fictional portrayal of the Von Erichs...not a good one. The timeline is completely fucked and they even messed up the iconic Von Erich feuds. Guess how much of the iconic Flair vs Kerry match at Parade of Champions they show?

NONE.

The wrestling scenes are mediocre at best. They did a pretty good job recreating the Sportatorium venue but the lighting is off and they're too lazy to mimic the amazing production values of early 80s WCCW wrestling.

It's all sterile.

The actors do not look like any of the Von Erich s...and the guy they picked for Ric Flair was God awful.

I'm pissed that they ruined the one chance we got to see this story on film.

Oppenheimer - This is a beautiful film. It s also way too long. I also don't like how it loses momentum and sorta peters out after the Trinity test.

It'll probably win a bunch of Oscars.

Somewhere Quiet - This movie pissed me off. The trailer was pretty good but only minutes into the film I knew I was watching a dud. The star...an Asian actress....has zero chemistry with the other actors and did not belong in this film. It all falls apart here. The story itself becomes nonsensical and the end was a slap in the face. As the climax approached I could tell they didn't know how to wrap it up.

You could edit this down to a bad Twilight Zone episode.

The audience got it right. 33 is a bit too high actually.

James, you really didn’t like iron claw?  I’m not a wrestling fan and had only heard of Ric Flair in the wrestlers portrayed (he came to visit my base in Iraq and was super cool).  I thought Efron and Jeremy Allen white put on superb performances. I really enjoyed it and agree it’s an Oscar contender. I can appreciate as a fan of wrestling how some of the freedom of expression left a sour note, but I loved the 2008 film The Wrestler and thought this was very close in quality.

As a fictional stand alone movie, it's passable. I might watch it again in a month or so now that I know it's not a portrayal of reality whatsoever.

I can see why casual fans and/or people who didn't grow up watching WCCW might appreciate it more.

The story just deserved so much more.

Imagine a Reagan movie that condenses his presidency, pretends Weinberger didn't exist, and instead of Grenada, it's the Falklands.

That's kinda what happened here.

Yeah The Wrestler was great. I need to watch that again.

Re: Most Recent Movie You've Seen

Again, I’m a complete ignoramus on wrestling. I’m not naïve to pop culture, so all the big names since Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior I’ve probably heard of. But the way this film portrayed the physical toll on abusing your body and the excess of drugs used ultimately to cope is very relatable to a lot of people.

The rest of my comment is vague enough not to spoil anything directly, but treads far too close I’ll hide the rest:

Hidden Text:

I Wikipedia’d the family the movie is based on, so I know the discrepancies from that. But I thought the movie do an excellent job with its version of Mike. The pressure and neglect to force him into the ring, despite his obvious passions, his personality, is just so egregious and anger provoking.  Just really fucking good writing and character development. Him losing that aspect of himself and checking out.  Just fucking heart wrenching stuff.

The only complaint I had is with the way they finished Kerry’s story. I understood the pain from the trauma was a lot for him. How much from the ring or the Harley wreck, I guess it’s never clear. And I understand his championship was largely a token gesture and gift for their brother David. But fuck, he was in a really good place (and I know celebrities crash and burn all the time) but like people with his status and connections, can’t go through a rehab first before offing himself?  Like he’s a huge commodity, so his father and the wrestling money men have a valid interest in protecting him from himself. And that never happens. Maybe that’s true in reality, but it really conflicted with the true moments of family and connectedness. Yea, their old man was a prick, but they all loved each other deeply. Especially considering the two other brothers were gone. The lack of vigilance from all sides just seemed poorly written.

You're right...they did a pretty good job with Mike. They could've done better. They pushed the musician angle... which is true...but didn't really go anywhere with his desire to get involved in the behind the scenes/production side. They didn't properly show his downward spiral. The massive drugs, the fights, car crashes, and his frustration with knowing he had brain damage and would never recover.

They barely touched on the Lance stuff (a fake Von Erich) who was brought in because of what happened to Mike.

While they do show the family's use of drugs, they should've leaned further into it....use The Wrestler as the guideline.

It's the infamous Penthouse article in 88 that goes over a lot of what had happened at that point.

Unfortunately I'm hooked on Dallas.

During a conversation a few days ago, the subject of Dallas was brought up. I was a huge fan of the show when I was a kid but haven't watched it since.

I remembered an episode where they go camping/hunting and it was one of my favorite episodes. I decided to look it up for shits and giggles and it wound up being on Amazon.

I only planned on watching the one episode for a trip down memory lane.

I watched it...and immediately had to watch the next one...and the next...

I'm currently in the middle of season 4.

Had I known I was going to get back into Dallas this year, I would've started at the beginning... instead I started at season 3 episode 6 (The Dove Hunt).

I'm also wondering how long I can last. During the 80s, I'm pretty sure I lost interest after the dream season fiasco (season 9).

It'll be different watching as an adult. It may get ridiculous before that point.

JR is amazing...the Tony Soprano of his time. Great character...and I love the little digs he gets in on everyone.

Can't stand Sue Ellen...even hated her as a kid.

Man....Pam (Victoria Principal) is such a hot piece of ass. Her storylines need to get better.

After Dallas runs its course, I'm gonna have to try watching Falcon Crest. These were the two primetime soaps I watched as a kid. I hated Dynasty and Knots Landing.
