#1411 Re: Guns N' Roses » CD - One million copies sold » 906 weeks ago
No...it hasn't. 1.3 million worldwide. It's at around half a million US
"as far as geffen is concerned"
he's talking about best buy buying 1.3 up front. not all of them have found their way out of the warehouse yet but it's all the same to gnr/chinese democracy since they're already paid for.
if you're wanting to talk resale where the numbers turn to "success" - gnr still does 1.3 in the u.s. without packaging another disc and sending it to another distributer. best buy will get rid of those copies one way or another and gnr will eventually get credit for each and every one while best buy is stuck selling them at 5 dollars a piece.

Millions of stoned hippies loved the grateful dead, too.
I prefer to not have to be stoned to appreciate Guns and Roses.
Are you kidding me? That's what you got from my post? That i need to be stoned in order to appreciate Guns N Roses? talk about missing my point....I like the song and band sober as well. It's not a crutch but a simple fact: Good pot improves the experience of music of all kinds, as well as food and sex. You should try it.

Certainly, but I am not talking about the old albums, i am talking about this one.
One thing is for sure though, I am definitely not a hater or just someone who bitches to bitch. I have tried with everything in me to listen over and over and over in hopes of something clicking but it just hasn't.
It isn't because the music is "Too Complex" *my favorite excuse* or what have u, I just think it sounds very manufactured, very robotic, very tight and the music just doesn't breathe. too much studio magic etc etc.
sometimes I just want to hear a kick ass guitar solo without 2 billion effects on it.
The VR and GNR thing is perfectly easy to see
VR, dirty bluesy riff rockers could use a bit more focus a la Axl
GNR too many ballads not enough balls which the old band lends
I guess the thing with CD is, it is almost like Axl forgets he is Axl Rose. I don't want Axl to be Elton John or Freddie Mercury or Rob Zombie or Trent Reznor
He is Axl Rose.......... U know? does that make any sense?
its my whole who is GNR argument cause for me, VR sound more GNR than GNR.
I guess as fans though, we sometimes care a little too much when in reality it doesn't affect us at all.
I just see so many other artists giving a shit and doing great things with their fame etc and u have Axl who just doesn't do anything.
my other fave band Bon Jovi for instance, top tour of 2008, Jon won the Philanthropy award for all his charity work etc etc
GNR should be a HUGE metallica/Bon Jovi/U2 type band but instead they are more on the level of bands of yester year.
People are really excited that CD was the 33rd best selling album? This is GNR for fuck's sake, being happy going gold is ludicrous.
it's clear that this line of thinking is no longer relevant any more. a reunion wouldn't bring balls back to the music nor would it increase the number of rockers. gnr was gong in this direction before the break up.
some people say catcher sounds clutterred and that the old demo sounds better. i listen to the demo and think it sounds bare and clunky.

I get where you are coming from D-machine. I think CD, Raid, Shacklers, and Scraped are the weakest songs on the album. Those 4 songs could have been great if their arrangements had been more raw. Its on those 4 songs that I really miss Slash and the rest of the original members. I find myself wishing those songs had more prominent drum, rythym guitar, and bass riffs (especially in the intros)....and a lead guitar that connected with the songs better . Could I at least get a little cymbals and cowbell?
I think Axl is great at singing vocals, writing lyrics, and composing ballads...but he could use a little help on his rock arrangements.
That being said, I really love the album. I haven't listened to a cd this much in years.
replacing the drum and guitar parts with different ones wouldn't undo the layering and mixing of the album
#1415 Re: Guns N' Roses » Dave Navarro on Chinese » 906 weeks ago
very mature and classy musician and man
very good guitar player as well
he also does a good job directing pornos
he would also be a draw to the band if he joined.

Smoking Guns wrote:D, I appreciate your posts and your honesty. GNR was like the San Francisco 49'ers of the 80's early 90's... A dynasty. When anything less than a championship was a disgrace..... Now 49'er fans are happy with a winning season and say "well, there is a lot of parity now". GNR used to be the biggest greatest baddest band on the planet. Now none of those words make me think of GNR. Its a shame to see how far GNR has fallen. I do "like" some songs on the album.
To a certain extent I think GNR fans hold Axl to an unfair standard. Granted he brought some of that on himself with allowing the album to be hyped so much, but NO ONE from that era can make music like they did in their prime. Its literally impossible. All artists peak in their late 20s/early 30s. Are Metallica, AC/DC. Megadeth, etc. making music to the standard they set decades ago? Hell no. I haven't heard the AC/DC album in its entirety yet, but that Metallica album is pure shit. These bands are all shells of their former selves. You cant expect AC/DC to make Highway to Hell quality music anymore and you cant expect Metallica to make a Master of Puppets/Justice type album anymore. All these artists we grew up with are either approaching fifty or are in their fifties.
So why does Axl have to be placed on a pedestal he can no longer stand on? When VR released their first album, I didn't see people bitching that it wasn't as good as their prior resumes. They just enjoyed whatever songs they liked on the album. Axl releases something and its supposed to surpass AFD.
IF there's a second album, I hope Axl avoids creating another hype machine(it clearly didn't work on any level) and just lets the music do the talking. Then maybe expectations can come back down to earth. Face it....He will NEVER, ever do anything fresh or innovative again. He can still make some good music obviously, but its time for the long time fans to realize the AFD-UYI type output of music for this band(ANY lineup) is loooooooong gone.
agree with most of that. Not so much that musicians are out of their prime once they pass their 30's but that the expectations we put on rock bands like gnr to continue to create the same type of music they did in the past is not practical.
Axl should find himself a bluesy guitarist and sit at a piano and finish out the rest of his career playing good old fashioned rock n roll. He's too old to give us what made us fall in love with him and gnr but he's not too old to give us amazing music and make some new fans.
#1417 Re: Guns N' Roses » Chinese Democracy Chart Positions Thread » 907 weeks ago
not great but most cd's are off that chart by now
and then removed from some of the shelves
and that right there is the key
gnr is hoping this thing will steadily sell
i think it will, myself

More importantly, millions more customers at hundreds more locations.

What a fucking joke! People feeling compelled to buy an AC/DC album becasue of Wal-Mart. This discusion is ridiculous. An AC/DC greatest hits would kill in sales with or without promo. I know alot of people who bought Black Ice and do in fact really like that glorified piece of plastic with some prints on it. I know of only one fucking person who bought Chinese Democracy and he had very little to say about it when I asked him what he thought. "Meh it's o.k. but not as good as the old stuff" is the standard response. Oh and in Canada you can buy these albums anywhere you damn well feel like. No exclusive Best Buy or Wal-Mart stuff going on here so explain to me why AC/DC sells better in Canada? Cause of a Wal-Mart promotional campaigne? Gimme a fucking break.
None of the albums are as good as the old stuff, including AC/DC and Metallica, so that is irrelevant.
Wal Mart exclusives have dominated over best buy so far. Since it's only best buy's first try we can't condem future success but I'm saying right now that the trend will continue if Best Buy decides to try it again.
If CD sold like hot cakes the first week and then flopped from then on I would consider another point of view but that is clearly not the case.
#1420 Re: Guns N' Roses » Whats the opinion people in your life have on CD? » 907 weeks ago
it's amazing how easily people will echo what they've heard from others and adopt it as their own way of thinking (i.e. axl is an asshole, axl broke up the band, etc.)like mindless sheep. maybe he is an asshole but most don't have a clue one way or the other and shouldn't have an opinion, to be honest.
