#241 Re: Guns N' Roses » CD - One million copies sold » 873 weeks ago

That is good news and simply reaffirms what some of us have been trying to say all along...promo, promo, promo.   This album can still do well because the music is solid and that is the merit on which it can rest upon.

#242 Re: Guns N' Roses » Chinese Democracy Chart Positions Thread » 873 weeks ago

I think CD would be a decent follow up to the Illusions but I can't put this new album on the level of UYI I or II.  I like the album and think the music is much better than the success it has had but UYI I and II had  stuff like Estranged/Coma/Breakdown/Don't Cry/YCBM/Dust N Bones, etc etc.  Nothing on CD is at that level in my opinion but it is a strong album, in its' own right.

Why a video for Better now? its been out for a while now, even tho you wouldnt of thought so by airplay (lack of)...
why a video now.. videos accompany singles, not come along after the fact when they can be bothered..
If it helps Better get more airplay then i`m all for it, as i thought this was the holy grail of C.d and would make or break the album as far as the impatient 3m10s disposable pop single lovin public goes.
I still think a re-release at a better time for the album would do it wonders also.

I think if it were out now (the keyword definitely being now) it would help but time is passing quickly and it looks like once again we are going to see another blown opportunity.  You can only blow so many until it's too late.

I think you may be right about a re-release as well.

Good post.

What indicates that GNR is gonna suddenly start doing more promo for this album?

Who watches videos anymore & how is that gonna have much effect on sales? (ok, maybe that was 3 questions):P

1. Axl's word.
2. The people who warrant countdowns on VH1 and MTV I would assume.  The fact that Billboard has a chart for videos might signify there is an audience as well.
3. Not all that much by itself but coupled with promo it could go a long way.  How do you think Britney, Jonas Brothers, etc sales records?  It's certainly not their massive talent.  Now I'm not saying this will make the album HUGE all of the sudden I just think it will spark interest enough to "maintain" the cds longivity on the top 100.  That is the key to success...not taking a HUGE nosedive but rather hovering around the 50k mark for a little longer then tapering off slowly with small rises and falls in between.

#245 Re: Guns N' Roses » Chinese Democracy Chart Positions Thread » 873 weeks ago

I think promo and a video is what is really needed.  It's sold somewhere around 375 thousand or so right now so it wouldn't take that large of a push to have it to gold by January.  A video (better yet two or three) and some decent promo and I think it could be in decent shape.  Going the Best Buy route kills most of the "impulse" and "casual listeners" sales so the most sensible way to make this album sale good is to use PROMO!  Promo will intrigue people who like what they hear to order online.  A video for Better must happen and I think a follow-up video of Street of Dreams would be the key.

I've said since the first week of lackluster sales that this album has the potential of being one of those albums that stays on the top 100 a good long ride.  That would get it to some decent sales regardless of highest chart position.

What song have you been a part of, heard or unheard (;)) that you are most proud of since joining GNR?

Were there any songs on the album that nearly didn't make it?

What has been your most frustrating moment with GNR and what's been the best moment?

Definitely Halloween. Amazing how such a simple and basic piano technique, that was actually taught to Carpenter on bongos by his father just to learn rhythm... became one of the most haunting instrumental pieces ever recorded.

But I also want to give a shout out to some others....

Psycho theme
--- the opening to the original, and that music - legendary

Dawn of the Dead
--- the pulse-pounding Goblin electronic music, just is claustrophobic, and classic

Day of the Dead
--- the opening is just... epic

Halloween III
--- the 'Main Theme' which opens the film, with the electronica stuff, and the computerized-pumpkin... it's like a drill in your head you never forget

Phantasm theme
--- unlike the others, which open their films, the Phantasm theme is a fantastic recurring piece throughout the films. My preference is the the heavier rocked-up version from Phantasm II

As for some great 'songs'...

Mr. Sandman (Halloween II, Halloween H2O)
--- Classic. Heard this song for years, and didn't even think of it this way. Heard it in H2... everytime now - Myers.

Have You Seen It? (Phantasm IV: Oblivion)
--- Rock song done by star Reggie Bannister, features cool chorus, backed by the Phantasm theme. Very cool.

Leatherface (Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III)
--- Oh man, who can forget Laaz Rockit's death metal tribute to our favorite cannibal? The song is absolute crap, but it's so bad, it's good. Fits a totally trashy vibe from the film.

He's Back (The Man Behind The Mask) (Jason Lives: Friday The 13th Part VI)
--- Nothing beats Coop belting it out, post one of the great F13 sequels, with Jason sound effects in the back. Great song, great film.

The Darkest Side of the Night (Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan)
--- Very 80's, but glam metal-ish track from the band Metropolis (who?), but it's a fucking awesome tune. I've got their album that this track came off of, shame they didn't do more.

and the pinnacle of all songs......

*drum roll*

Howling (Howling II: Your Sister Is A Werewolf)
--- A bad mid-80's new wave punk band singing "and i'll prowl now, through your dreams again... HOWLING", fit with Christopher Lee, dancing midgets, old man laughing their ass off during an orgy, a Transylvanian music festival, and Sybil Danning ripping her top off 18 times to the chorus, is one of the great memories i'll take with me throughout my life.

And let's not forget Cry Little Sister from the Lost Boys Soundtrack!!

There's some REALLY good ones out there.  I think Halloween, Pet Sematary, The Shining, Psycho, Friday the 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street are all some chill inducing themes and there are many more.  It's tough to pick one as the king but in my opinion the theme of HALLOWEEN is my all-time favorite.  It's such a simple yet maniacal mixture of notes that do and don't go together perfectly simultaneously in some crazy way.

Everytime I hear it I get the same sensation as a smell that reminds you of a distant memory...in this case one of crisp Autumn air, the smell of pumpkin and candy corn and one of something evil always just out of sight.

Halloween's theme is a perfect companion to the great 78 classic movie.

#249 Re: Guns N' Roses » Best Buy exclusive dramatically limited 1st week sales! » 873 weeks ago

Sorry, Best Buy DID hurt sales in my opinion.  Sure the hardcore fans would buy it online but most people (like myself) don't put themselves particularly out just to buy an album.  It's like buying chips for some people, if it is there in front of them and looks good they will pick some up while shopping for other things they need.  That's why Wally-World would have been so much better.  If some of the people who like GNR but aren't like most of us saw the cd they may pick it up while doing other shopping.  Many of the people who are AC/DC fans could give a shit less about ordering online or driving an hour out of their way to get to a Best Buy.  I guess we'll never know for sure but I FIRMLY believe album sales would have been around twice as strong.  That doesn't make it an ENORMOUS success of course, but doing much better than it has.

HOW IN THE HELL CAN THIS ALBUM BE #12 ON ROLLING STONE'S TOP 50 FOR THE YEAR? MOTLEY'S SAINTS WASN'T EVEN ON THE TOP 50 AND IT SMOKES THIS ALBUM LIKE AXL'S EGO SMOKES.

No offense meant to you whatsoever but Saints is NOT a good album.  A couple of songs were decent but this album is the weakest album they have ever did outside of New Tatoo in my opinion .   Even Generation Swine was better.

Chinese Democracy is leaps and bounds better than the Crue's last effort.

Again, I am simply stating my opinion the way you stated yours.  That doesn't make either of us correct.

Peace.
