I = Position
II = Worldwide Sales
III = US Sales Only

This was an offical list, based upon at least sales, thus not 100% accurate, but a fairly clear reflection of what albums are near the top.

Michael Jackson for example claims "Thriller" has sold almost 75 million, although this is unlikely.

"Appetite For Destruction" was claimed to have sold closer to the 35 million copies mark, by some.

Both "Use Your Illusion 1" supposedly sold 23 millions copies & "Use Your Illusion II" 27 million copies at least.

...And some albums weren't counted after a certain sales point.

It's great how the only 3 actual albums (excluding Lies and TSI) GNR released are all in this list.  Pretty amazing i think.

I expect we may see GH in there one day.

I really contest the accuracy of that list. Most sales totals for albums, especially those released before the SoundScan era, are way off. Thriller has reputedly gone 104x platinum, which before you scoff at you should think of Michael Jackson's WORLDWIDE, outside-USA appeal, especially during his heyday. "Only" 54 million doesn't seem so accurate anymore. Appetite's sold well over 30 million worldwide.

Yeah, Thriller was a worldwide craze for several years. Even starving kids in Africa owned that record. Everyone I knew then owned Thriller, and most had two copies(tape and LP). Considering the fact that tapes wore out pretty quickly, a majority of the people who bought it purchased more than one during that craze. Then take into account the explosion of the compact disc and everybody buying it on that format.

It definitely sold more than 54 million.

I would also place Rumours higher on the list. Nowhere near Thriller proportions, but they were huge at that time(late 70's) and that has always been regarded as a true gem of the 70's.

Platinum means different things in different countries, and as I say some sales for some sad reason stopped getting counted after a certain point, so realistically this is as close as you're going to get to a real 100 Best Selling Albums of All Time.

...But as for "Thriller" although it's by far the best selling, Jackson himself always over calculated the sales, "Thriller" in no way near the 100 million mark some claim.

However no album ever will...

RIAA is USA only though from what i understand, so world wide numbers change things...and another thing i also understand its nigh on impossible to determine worldwide sales so the list above may be a bit off anyway

but there are some pretty trendy albums from their respective years up there so it's prolly relatively close
